Notes for Emily Priscilla Harris
April 2004, TFPL: Reference here must be made to Johnson Atkinson Busfeild's superb family history volumes, containing the source material from which he wrote his "Fragments".  These volumes are currently held by his great-grandson David Ferrand who has been adding to them as the years go by.
Anyhow at the time of Emily's death, JAB was still alive and reasonably fit.  So he included an account of her death, the only occasion, as he put it, in her life in which she caused any grief to anyone.  She died in Edinburgh of puerperal fever and JAB and another doctor accused the one in attendance on her of causing her death from transference from another lady he was attending who had also died recenly from the same cause.  Of course nothing could be proved.  JAB and the widower, William, were obviously both crestfallen about the whole matter.  On my next visit, if I can make one, I should photograph the five of so pages in which he describes the tumultous events.  (Late 2010: done and now on my web-site.)

She is to be found with her parents in the 1851 census, aged 6, but not in 1861.  All I could find of her, or possibly her in 1861 was an entry for an Emeline Harris who was a governess aged [sic] 18 and music teacher at a small girls school in Manchester and born in Kenilworth, Yorkshire.  Might this have been her playing a bit of truant?

In 1871 she was a respectable married woman with her husband and 4 year old daughter.

On her death certificate, she normally lived at Morland Hall, Nr Penrith.  She was 35, both her parents were deceased and the cause of death was “Pregnancy and Delivery. Acute Chollericle (?), Diarrhoea (?), supermising ??????? after delivery; certified by Angus Macdonald Physician.  The informant on 19th July at Edinburgh (who related that he went up promptly by train) was J A Busfeild, father-in-law, Upwood, Bingley, Yorkshire.

The death certificate gives the names of both Emily’s parents: Alfred Harris and Anne Elizabeth Harris nee Dearman (bless the Scottish practice of always recognising maiden names!).

Paul Frecker reports that her and her father’s photographs were taken by Camille Silvy at his studio in London on 17th June 1862; this was ten months before her marriage in April the following year.  She would have been 16 ½ at the time of the photo.  (I’m slightly surprised that, at that age, her mother was not involved in the photography.)
