Notes for Guy Ferrand Ferrand (born BUSFEILD)
Deserted his wife for the Governess, Miss Smith, with whom he lived for the rest of his life.

Never mentioned in all our childhoods.  We were quite convinced he was dead.

- TFPL

In Aug 1998, Chris Briscoe came up with a story told him by his mother that our grandfather had matriculated at Christ Church Oxford and possibly done one year.  Then at the end of some holidays a telegram was received at his home to the effect that the mother and baby were doing well.

The natural conclusion is that this was not a hoax and that we may just have some relations we have never heard of.

At least his subsequent actions (above) showed that he had form!

TFPL - 19.8.98

And in DEC '99: I am quite certain he was born with the surname Busfeild and changed it with his father in 1890 at the age of 9.  MAY 2000: Confirmed by the fact that from our parents' marriage certificate I have just discovered that his name was Guy Ferrand Ferrand - which would make eminent sense if he was born Guy Ferrand Busfeild.

Dec 2000: Just got extra info from Rosie Ferrand, who is doing an enormous Ferrand one name study.  His will details are:

"Ferrand Guy of Broomhill Lodge, Christow, Exeter died 7 April 1946
"Probate London 9 October to Hugo William John Ferrand Company Assistant Secretary  Effects £51,303/8/6"  [No punctuation in the entry.]

His death record is:
"Ferrand Guy Devon Central  Vol 5b Page 66 Jun Qtr 1946  Age at death 64"

In the 1901 census he was living with his father and stepmother at St Ives, Bingley, Yorks, aged 19 and an undergraduate, born in Scotland.

April 2004: In the JAB Family History volumes, currently held by David Ferrand, there is an account of his birth (see his mother) and a photograph of him as a young man of 25 - already completely bald on top (for which my mother said she once made a bag for his "hare", his wig).
___________________

On his birth certificate, he is Guy Ferrand Busfeild with his parents as William Busfeild, Justice of Peace, County Westmoreland, Landowner and Emily Priscilla Busfeild, maiden surname Harris, married on 19th April 1865 at Bingley, Yorkshire.  The informant on 21st July  was J A Busfeild, grandfather, Upwood, Bingley, Yorkshire, when Emily had died five days previously.

In the 1911 census he was living in a 20 room house at Hawkley Hurst, Lias, Hants with his wife Muriel and their first two children.  He was 29, she 27, Daphne 3 and Hugo 2. He was living off private means and the births were in, respectively, Edinburgh, Southsea, Hants, Chawton, Hants and Hawkley, Hants.

Staying with them were:

His father, William aged 73, married, b. in Bradford, Yorks
His sister Florence Marjorie aged 21, single, b. in Morland, Westmorland
His sister Hermione Monica aged 19, single, b. in Bingley, Yorks

Plus a visitor and 7 staff, a household of 15.

A municipal (and thus fairly reliable) web site on the hospitals in the area of Alton, Hants <http://www3.hants.gov.uk/museum/curtis-museum/alto...ton-hospitals.htm>; has this:

“Morland Hall/Gauvain Hospital
“In 1869, Frederick Crowley, a member of the brewing family, started to build his new house on fields to the south of King’s Pond. The house was called Ashdell. After Frederick died in 1910 the house was sold to Guy Ferrand who changed the name to Morland Hall.

“The next owner was Sir Henry Gauvain, the Medical Superintendent of the Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital. After joining the hospital in 1908, Sir Henry had become a pioneer in the treatment of children with tuberculosis of the bones or joints in this country, writing numerous papers on surgical tuberculosis, hospital design, and heliotherapy.

“In 1925, Sir Henry opened a clinic for private patients at Morland Hall and it was here that he died in January 1945. The premises were later acquired by the National Health Service and the name changed to the Henry Gauvain Hospital. In July 1958, together with Alton General Hospital and the Lord Mayor Treloar Orthopaedic Hospital, it came under the Alton Group Management Committee and it was they who offered all the furniture and other contents for sale in March 1964. The site is now the Ashdell housing development.”

Presumably he sold the house when he and Muriel separated.  This gives a date to the separation of 1925.

He was given a second name of Ferrand at the dying request of his mother who wanted his uncle, William Ferrand, to be a sponsor at his baptism.  (Written in his account of the birth and death by his grandfather J A Busfeild who made the actual birth registration in Edinburgh.)

At the time of our parents’ marriage in December 1937, he was reported in the 4th Dec issue of a paper called “...Gazette Newbury Herald and Berks County ...” to be of Bracon Lodge, Brackonash, Norwich.

TFPL, July 2017: Andrew Sorrell got in touch with this information about the sale of Morland hall:

“I have some papers regarding my home on land near ‘Morland Hall’, Alton.

“These state that Guy Ferrand Ferrand bought extra land on the other side of the road from Morland Hall in October 1920.

“In September 1922 he sold the whole Estate to Gladys Rider Cobb, so this may be the date of separation mentioned on your web site.

“The land on which my house now stands was sold by Mrs Cobb in October 1923 to a local farmer.”

I do not know whether this was in any way coincident with the date of the breakup of my grandparents marriage.  They might have moved to an alternative residence as the returns from farming might have been low compared to putting the money in government stock.

He was on the electoral roll for Alton in 1915, 1920, 1921.

He was in Alton and on the electoral roll for Petersfield, Hants in 1923.

He was in Clanville Lodge, Penton Grafton and on the Electoral roll for Basingstoke in 1924, 1925, 1927, 1929

He was in Bracon Ash and on Electoral Roll for Norfolk South in 1930, 1931,

Muriel was with him in 1920 and 1921

Muriel was at Clanville Lodge, Penton Grafton, with him, in 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927  but not on the roll with him in 1929

Muriel was at The Old House Bradfield in 1939.

I think this delays the separation until c.1927-9.  My mother said she went to school when she was 15, presumably when the Governess left and this was in 1927.

TFPL, October 2020: Some information is available about Guy’s financial worth.  My first source was my Aunt Daphne, his eldest daughter, who said he had an income of £4000 a year and she thought he did rather well out of that.  I imagined that this had come from some funding by his father.

But I have since found that his mother’s family was very wealthy, and his maternal grandfather Alfred Harris died with effects of £under (ie just below) £300,000.  To this must be added his Real Esatate including Oxton hall which his two unmarried daughters lived in for twenty years or so after his death.  The Effects, and presumably the Residence, were left in trust for his three daughters.

Guy’s mother refers to this trust fund and that she had a right to specify the division of her share at her death.  her share woiuld have started at £100,000 less any duties but plus the value of the real estate.  Her will then provided  3/7 for her eldest son and 2/7 each for Emily and Guy, to be handed otu when they reached the age of 21.  So he got at least £28,000 from that.

Then his aunt Anna Jane took the view that Guy had not been adequately provided for, unlike his brother William, so she left him all her estate of £40,000, less any duties but plus her share of her father’s Real Estate.  Perhaps Guty got £30,000 from Jane.

Then there was Sophia.  I have yet to see her will.

So, we can tot this up:
(a) The capital value of £3000 a year at 4% ield is £75000.
(b) From his mother he had around £28,000
(c) from his aunt Jane he had £30,000 odd.
(d) From his Aunt Sophia,  . . .
The total is £128,000 multiply by 100 to give its 2020 value and we have soemthing around £12m in present-day money.  He was not poor.

Arms Generally notes for Guy Ferrand Ferrand (born BUSFEILD)
On his bookplate, a copy of which I have, he had six quarters (curiously, when only four were needed).  While it is in black and white, the tinctures are shown with the normal hatchings, enabling the arms to be blazoned::

1. Argent a cinquefoil gules and on a chief gules two crosses flory vair. (Ferrand)
2. Gules a two headed eagle or displayed, on a chief enarched ermine a rose gules between two martlets sable. (Atkinson)
3. Argent on a chevron gules five goutté d'eau between three fleur-de-lys vert with a saltire for difference (Busfield but these arms are not those of his grandfather's but those granted to an uncle in the late 19th century.)
4. Ferrand.
5. Azure on a chevron ermine between 3 hedgehogs and in the centre chief point a bundle of reeds erect or, bended vert, three ears of wheat slipped of the last. (Harris)
6. Ferrand

Any identification of the unknown quartering would be much appreciated.  Candidates are those of:
1. His mother's (an heiress) family, Harris of Oxton, Yorks.  Possibly this is quarter number 5 with the hedgehogs, common in Harris arms.
2. His maternal grnadmother's (another heiress) family of Dearman.

The arms are not those of his grandmother's family of Priestley of White Windows, Sowerby.

TFPL, Jan 2006: Quarter 5 is definitely Harris arms, which were granted to his maternal grandfather, Alfred Harris, on 23 May 1877 as:

Azure on a chevron ermine between 3 hedgehogs and in the centre chief point a bundle of reeds erect or, bended vert, three ears of wheat slipped of the last.

Further, his paternal grandmother’s family had nothing to do with the Priestleys of White Windows.

Notes for Guy Ferrand & Muriel (Family)
On their marriage certificate they were:
Guy Ferrand Ferrand, 25 bachelor, occ. Esquire (sic), of St Ives, Bngley, Yorks, father William ferrand, occ. Esquire.
Muriel Hallifax, 23, spinster of Kingsland House, Shawford, father John Salwey Hallifax (dec), Admiral in Royal Navy.
The witnesses were Charlotte Annie Hallifax (her mother), William Ferrand (his father), Guy W Hallifax (her brother) and William H Ferrand (his full, elder brother).
______________________

The guide to the date of their separation is from my mother’s oft-repeated remark that she only went to school at the age of 15, almost certainly because her governess and her father had recently run off together.  My mother was 15 in 1927.
