In the 1901 census he was a solicitor living at 40a Connaught Street with his wife and one daughter, he was aged 50 and born in Penshurst, Kent.
In his house with them were four servants, a total economic unit of seven.  The four sons were all away at, and to be found at, boarding school.

His birth record is not on FreeBMD for all of 1850 to 1852.

In 1886, Stuart’s birth, he was living at The Vale, Shortlands, Bockenham, Kent
In 1889, Mary’s birth, he was living at 40a Connaught St.
In 1890, Welbank’s birth, he was at 40a Connaught St.

His executor was his widow Katherine I Trotter, plus 2 others.

His admon gave his date and place of death.

His will was dated 14th February 1930 and the executors were to be his wife Katherine isabella, and his sons Meyrick Archibald and Stuart Ernest. The probate appointed all three of these, proving they were all alive on 19th Jan 1934.

In the will he further lists:

His son Welbak Alan Trotter,
His daughter Mary Katherine Hay, who had a trust of one fifth of his estate after his wife’s death.
Explicitly,  ‘my four sons...’ to whom he gave one fifth each of his estate after his wife died.
But Balfour Anthony did not get an explicit mention by name.

On their marriage certificate, No 47 of Inngleford, Norfolk, he was Ernest Balfour Trotter, 32, a solicitor of Epsom, W Surrey, son of William Trotter, gentleman.  She was Katherine Isabella Patteson, 30 and a spinster, of Cringleford, dau. of Henry Staniforth Patteson, gentleman.

The witnesses were Henry S Patteson [her father, presumably], Isabella K Patteson [her mother], Marion F Patteson and Herriet A Trotter [his sister].  The celebrant was Henry E Trotter [his brother and my gt-grandfather].

The marriage was by banns so no further information is available.

The following notice was placed in the Portsmouth Evening news on Monday 16th April 1883:

TROTTER-PATTESON--On the 12th inst, at Cringleford, Norwich, by the Rev H E Trotter, Vicar of Northam, Southampton, brother of the bridegroom, Ernest Balfour, youngest son of William Trotter, Esq, of Horton Manor, Epsom, Surrey, to Katherine Isabella, eldest daughter of Henry Staniforth Patteson, Esq, of Cringleford and Norwich.
