Notes for William Bartholomew
On Sarah's marriage cert is a Hotel Keeper.  In 1871 and 1881 census is at Crown Inn, Ashley: in '71 as publican, '81 as Licensed Victualler. In 1851 and 1861 was Ostler in Newmarket.

TFPL in Dec 1988: The odd thing is that RCLPL (1) researched his wife's family extensively, almost completing a soixante, (2) he researched his grandmother Greenwood's family (3) he extensively researched all previous ancestors but (4) he did NOT research his mother's family.  Why not?  (We know his mother sent him away when or before she remarried, to his aunt's at the age of seven, [not true! - TFPL, Nov 2010: he lived with his mother and stepfather until his mother died] but I would still have expected his remarkably high genealogical curiosity to extend to his Bartholomew grandparents.)

Or rather we have no record of any Bartholomew researches...  He could have found something and then destroyed his papers????  Or, even, someone else destroyed the papers?

Though he did obtain a copy of the Times' notice of his mother's remarriage and find and make a note of his step-father's location in 1925.

Weird.

One day I'll follow up the Bartholomews...  (promises, promises!)

In the Berks and Oxon Advertiser obituary on April 13th 1888 for WRL P-L  Mr Bartholomew is listed as one of those in the first Mourning Coach on the way from Wallingford to Whitchurch for the burial.  So he died after 1888...  [Note of Jun 2001: On page 6 of this obit it says that Sarah was the "third daughter of William Bartholomew, Esq., of Ashley, Cambridgeshire", and on page 7 it says that in the Mourning Coach there was Mr Bartholomew.  But it does not say that the former Wm Bartholomew was the late Mr Bartholomew nor that the latter Mr Bartholomew was in fact the former's son, another William Bartholomew.  So the wrong deduction was not unnaturally made.  Wm Bartholomew, Sarah's father, in fact died on 29th August 1885.]

On the 1881 census for the Crown Inn, Newmarket Road, Ashley cum Silverley, Cambridgeshire are the Bartholomew family of husband, wife and daughter, plus a Domestic Servant of 16 years old.:

                 AGE    Occupation             Birthplace

William       63      Licensed Victualler   Scotland
Mary Ann      64      Wife          Chippenham, Cambridge, England
Eliza         20      Daughter      Newmarket, Cambridge, England

Thanks to Alan Puddick's purchase of the 1881 census on CDROM.

On the 1861 census
, there were six children at No 2 Turf Terrace, All Saints Parish, Newmarket.  William was an ostler at the Star inn or public house at that time.

Wm was also an ostler at the births of his daughters Sarah Ann in 1851 and Eliza in 1860.

On the 1871 census he was the publican at the Crown Inn, Ashley.  Thomas and Eliza were still living at home, then.  (Where does Thomas come from: he wasn't in the 1861 census, unless Jonathan became Thomas???)

TFPL, 22.6.2001: His death was a mystery as he attended his son-in-law's, WRL P-L, funeral in 1888 but I could not find any death notice after that date.  Eventually this was resolved by realising that it might just have been his son, William, who was at the funeral and, indeed, he was found to have already died on 29th August 1885 (Ref Newmarket 3b 400); now for the burial note...

TFPL, 25 Jul 2001: Received his death certificate, No 400 of the registration district of Newmarket with death in the Grazeley sub-district of Cambridge & Suffolk:
