Note: I only found this 1881 census, later, because someone had found it on Ancestry; it reveals that they were in England in 1881 and they did have a child here, Leopold, thereby making my reservations about him below into rubbish.

In 1881 they were in England at 18, Liston Road, Clapham, Wandsworth, London:

The 1891 census shows he and his wife and family had been in India from marriage to around 1890.  I would even guess they married there too.  Anyhow in 1891 they were at Powys Court, Carew Road, Eastbourne, Sussex:

First name(s)  Last name  Role  Marital status  Sex  Age  Birth year  Occupation  Birth place

The baptism of their children abroad, all from FindMyPast’s file of British India Office Births & Baptisms (hopefully copies of the original documents will be found later to check up on a couple of minor oddities, below, when entering each child’s full details):

Last name  First name(s)          Year Of Birth  Location
Drummond   Ethel Louisa Powys     1876           Ahmedabad, Bombay
Drummond   Herbert Cecil Powys    1877           Ahmedabad, Bombay
Drummond   Elsie Kathleen Mary    1879           Belgaum, St Mary, Bombay
Drummond   Eileen Amy Powys       1882           Aden
Drummond   Eileen Amy Powys       1882           Bombay, St Mary, Bombay
Drummond   Gladys Margaret Pawys  1887           Mahableshwar, Bombay

This gives an additional child in the form of Herbert.  Had he died?  Or was he at the tender age of 5 already away at school?

Now for the English Drummond births with a Fairbrother mother:

Name:                             Mother's Maiden Surname:
DRUMMOND, LEOPOLD DOUGLAS BELL    FAIRBROTHER
GRO Reference: 1880  D Quarter in TUNBRIDGE  Volume 02A  Page 606

Name:                              Mother's Maiden Surname:
DRUMMOND, JAMES GEOFFREY POWYS     FAIRBROTHER
GRO Reference: 1889  S Quarter in EASTBOURNE  Volume 02B  Page 78

I don’t believe the 1880 birth is theirs, it is unlikely that they made a trip back to England considering the time it would have taken.  Let’s see if he appears in any later censuses.  Or even elsewhere in the 1991 census.

Curiously no will, probate or administration has been found on the new Iron Mountain will site.  But it was found on FindMyPast and Ancestry, see his Will Notes.

What was his second name?  Houlbrooke, or Hoolbrooke or Holbrooke?

I have seen a variety of spellings:

1833: at baptism the register entry is Hoolbrooke
1875: At marriage the register entry is Houlbrooke
1876: At the baptisms of his children the entries were:
Up t0 1893, his army entries were all as Houlbrooke
1893: At his death registration it was Houlbrooke
1893: At burial the register has Houlbrooke
1893 at his probate it was Houlbrooke

(awaiting info from the baptisms.)
