Notes for Emma Tunnicliffe
Her birth index:

Name:                   Mother's Maiden Surname:
TUNNICLIFFE EMMA        BROWN
GRO Reference: 1868  M Quarter in STOKE UPON TRENT  Volume 06B  Page 155

This is slightly odd: At marriage she left her father’s name blank, so the presumption is that he mother had the surname of Tunnicliffe.  But is seems that her mother was Brown.  A glance at the 1871 census might be interesting:

Note on her birthplace: In all her censuses after marrying she gave her birthplace as Fenton, but the district her birth was registered in was Stoke on Trent.  Fenton is not a parish (see Phillimore’s Atlas & Index of Parish Registers) so it might not even be in Stoke district.  The birth certificate would help but that’s too expensive for idle curiosity.

If the above 1871 census is indeed her family, was she trying to escape it?  Might this be part of the reason for her husband changing his name for two censuses?
