TFPL, 2021: He died on Tues 18th May, possibly somewhere in Staffs; we were told he was in a severe decline on the day before; he had been in a home for a few years.

Sometime later on this year, his death certificate will be available by search at a few major institutions in UK. This will give his date of birth - if it was known.
After that, and if he left a will, his probate entry can be searched for. This will give his death date that is on public record, for free!
If we can find his birth records, it is fairly easy to search Irish records for his ancestry back to 1865 or so. Before that it is difficult if not impossible.

His mother Honorah McDermott may have died in Stafford in 1989 aged 90 and born on 29 May 1899. The probate for Honorah said she died on 13 March 1989 at 66 Old Eaton Rd Rugeley Staffs. However her estate while declared at £70000 went into Administration probably because she had left no will; nevertheless the Admin would include who was appointed and which could well be Michael Desmond.
But I can find no record of her birth in England. There are quite a few Honorah Morans in the 1911 irish census.
In 1939 she seems to have been at the same area as her husband and two sons and was entered into the Register in the row above her daughter, Mary Bernardette. Her birth date was the same as that entered at her death and Mary’s was 25 Dec 1933. A note was put above Mary’s name that indicates her married name was DASTGIR but there are 27 marriages of Mary B McDermott and none has a husband anywhere near that name.

His father was John McDermott, born on 8 Mar 1907, probably in Staffs. There is a likely family that he was born into in the 1911 census, the only family of McDermotts in Staffs. The father of this family was another John McDermott and had probably married a lady, Margaret, of the married name of Holcroft as there were a bunch of Holcroft children also in the house. A marriage is to be found in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffs between a John McDermott and a Margaret Houldcroft in 1905.
Lots to dig into and check up on. The odd certificate will be needed. All to wait until Michael’s birth details arrive to give some hopefully concrete evidence to work from.
