As his parents were still in their family home in 1939, I wonder where this home came from? Was it his mother-in-law’s or was it rented? I can’t see that he would have bought it from his incomes as a retired army officer.
______________
Their children from a search for Adderley births with a mother’s maiden name of Birkbeck
Last name First name(s) Year Of Birth Location
Adderley Rosemary E 1913 Staines, Middlesex
Adderley John A 1916 Staines, Middlesex
Adderley Michael C 1917 Grantham, Lincolnshire
Adderley Mary 1922 Mutford, Suffolk
But I can’t find the fifth dau. BP says she was Elizabeth Joan born 12 Jun 1919. The answer was quite simple: the GRO site had the mother’s maiden name as Birkbeak and FindMyPast correctly transcribed it from the old index sheets as Birkbock!
So we have, additionally:
Adderley Elizabeth J 1919 Mutford, Suffolk
and the individual index lines from the GRO are:
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
ADDERLEY, ROSEMARY ETHELDREDA BIRKBECK
GRO Reference: 1913 D Quarter in STAINES Volume 03A Page 7
ADDERLEY, JOHN ARDEN BIRKBECK
GRO Reference: 1916 M Quarter in STAINES Volume 03A Page 2
ADDERLEY, MICHAEL CHARLES BIRKBECK
GRO Reference: 1917 J Quarter in GRANTHAM Volume 07A Page 706
ADDERLEY, ELIZABETH JOAN BIRKBEAK
GRO Reference: 1919 S Quarter in MUTFORD Volume 04A Page 1736
ADDERLEY, MARY
GRO Reference: 1922 D Quarter in MUTFORD Volume 04A Page 1746
The original paper index sheets have Birkbeck for the mother’s maiden name of Mary, so I don’t know why the new GRO index has it left out. I have told them and hope they may re-check.
