Notes for Charles William Martin
Grandson of John, 3rd Duke of Atholl.

Probably (cf Burke’s Peerage of 1885) he was the son of Rev George Martin, d. 1822, and Mary Murray, d. 1814, the 4th dau. of Jphn Murray, 3rd duke who lived 1755-1830 and m. Jan dau. of Charles, 9th lord Cathcart and which Charles was gt-gt-grandfather of Constance Cathcart who m. Wm Harris Ferrand, the elder brother of my grandfather Guy Ferrand.  Wow!

His death cannot be identified, though from his disappearance starting with the 1961 census, though Sarah said she was ‘Married’ not ‘Widow’; in 1871 she was definitely a widow.  So it is likely that he died between 1851 and 1871, with more probability between 1861 and 1871.

There is no will on PCC held at The national Archives from 1851, when he was last recorded, to 1858 when wills are found in the Holborn holdings.

I have looked at all the Martins from 1858 to 1862 and so far there is no will for him.  But there is one in 1863 which is precisely him as it says he died at Belvidire, Christchurch and includes his executor and widow, Sarah Martin.  But he died in or since December 1861 at Sea (presumably it took some time to establish this).
