Notes for George Edward Martin
His only appearance on British records is in the 1851 when he was a Naval Cadet.
There are too Many George E Martin deaths to identify his.
In 1872 he was named as executor and Banker for his mother’s estate.
In 1882 he was named as Administrator and Bank Manager for his b rother Charles Walker’s estate.
In both admons he was given the address of Westbourne Grove, Bayswater, Mx and said to be George Edward Martin.
If his brother’s estate was resworn in 1892, presumably he did this swearing and thus was still alive.
This led to this death index at Poole, not a million miles away from Christchurch:
Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Deaths Sep 1908 (>99%)
MARTIN George Edward 75 Poole 5a 136
This was confirmed to be him by his daughter being given administration for Probate (See Will Notes)

In the 1881 census he was married and with one daughter in Westbourne Grove, Paddington:
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
George E Martin Head Married Male 49 1832 Bank Manager Bombay
Mary A Martin Wife Married Female 49 1832 - H Wycombe Buckinghamshire
Anna R Martin Daughter Single Female 19 1862 - Colchester, Essex
Louisa Martin Niece Single Female 18 1863 - Winchfield, Hampshire
Gertrude Pepsin Servant Single Female 17 1864 D Buckinghamshire
James Spratting Messenger Married Male 47 1834 Bank Messenger Kent
I wonder who Louisa the niece was? The only candidate currently is Eve Louisa, daughter of John James martin. But here she gives her birth as Winchfield, Hants and Eva’s birth is clearly Sherborne, Dorset. Dunno about this one!
________________
The above 1881 census is definitely him because of the Westbourne Grove address and the India birth. It shows his wife to be Mary A who was born in 1832 in High Wycombe, Bucks. This leads to a sole marriage:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Jun 1856 (>99%)
BIRNEY John Nathaniel Pancras 1b 142
HILLIER Frances Ann Pancras 1b 142
MARTIN George Edward Pancras 1b 142
PEPIN Mary Ann Pancras 1b 142
Why did they marry at St Pancras and not a bit nearer her birth county of Bucks?
In view of the daughter, who may have descendants, it must be worth getting this marriage certificate.

The above led to finding Mary A Martin in the 1861 census. He was there as well but unidentifiable as his birthplace apparently contained nothing but in fact was, on the actual enumerator’s sheet, “Broach, Bombay Presidency B S” where B S stood for British Subject. I think this has at last revealed the correct birth place rather than the somewhat illegible stuff in the 1851 census:
