In “Merchants and the Military in Eighteenth Century Britain, British Army Contracts and Domesti Supply 1739-1763” Gordon E Bannerman writes of John Trotter:
On p. 86 he is mentioned in an account of the busess of his father and he. See his father’s Notes.
On p. 137: “… This is not to say that fortunes were not made from contracts. Both factors were present in the careers of Willan, Oswald and Dundas, all within the same sector of contracting. Wider mercantile portfolios tended to dilute the effects of profits from contracts. The most surprising aspect of mid-eighteenth century contraction is the relatively small number of men for whom the wealth obtained provied to be enduring. By 1833 the number of idnetifiable descendants of contractors amongst those possessing the highest rated homes in Britain is disappointingly small, with only three men clearly connected to mid-eighteenth century contractors: Trotter at the Soho Bazaar and Brice Pearce and William Mellish in Essex. All continued in some form the work of their antecedents.”
On pp. 148-9: “The importance of contractors in this sector, and their value to the state, is readily apparent. That these men formed the nucleus of an unofficial supply corps is reinforced both by the longevity of men such as Willan, Douglas and Oswald, and by the activities of descendants of Willan, Gardiner and Trotter in the same sector.”
