The LDS Vital records, but no FHL Film No, of Christenings had a George Welbank baptised on 23 Jul 1755 at Aldborough, Yorks.  His father was also George.

On the Vicar General's Licence, to marry Anne Trotter, of 24 May 1808, he is reported to be of age twenty-one and upwards, giving a birth of before 1787.
At the time of receiving this licence, his address was Great Winchester Street, London.
I have a photocopy of this marriage Licence with his signature on it.

Ancestry.com have a record for the baptism of a George, son of Sampson and Mary Wallbank [sic] on 28 Jun 1791 at Rocester [sic] parish, Staffs.

I wonder if this use of Sampson has anything to do with the Brown-Trotter sons had Sampson as forenames?  If it was a birth baptism, the date is a bit late for his marriage in 1808.
_________________________________________________________

In 1820 he was involved in buying a mortgage through Messrs Hanby Holmes, solicitors of Durham:

Ref No. D/HH 3/1/21/26

(1) Robert Johnson of Ploughlands, Crosby Garratt, Westmorland
(2) Ann Hutchinson of Barningham, Yorks., widow
(3) George Welbank of St. James' Place, Middlesex, Esquire; William Sampson of Copthall Court, Throgmorton Street, London, Esquire; Robert Clarke of Stockton, gentleman

Draft assignment by (2) to (3) of two messuages and lands (Kidley Close etc.) as specified in Arkengarthdale, Yorks., for the remainder of two terms of 2,000 years. Recites previous deeds.

Consideration: £500 [to (2) in part redemption of mortgage money due from (1) to (2)]

Just to confuse there is another George Welbank on the 1841 census, reported to be aged 62 and born in Middlesex.  And there is another one, aged 51 and living in York.

This gives a birth date of 1779, which corresponds with the baptism date.

So, he would be in the 1851 census…  And he was, and was a shoe-maker, so not our Merchant!.

In Feb 1821 the London Gazette had this, which sounds like him:

“Notice is hereby given, that the Partnership subsisting between George Welbank and John Petyt of No 80, Old, Broad Street, Ship and Insurance `Brokers under the firms of Brown, Welbank and Petyt and Welbak and petyt, was dissolved on the 30th Day of December last by mutual consent, the said George Welbank retiring—Alldebts due to and from the late partnership will be liquidated and settled and the business continued by the said John Petytr, at No 80, Old Broad-Street aforesaid—Witness our hands this 7th daye of February 1821.
George Welbank.
John Petyt.”

This would tie in with his death in May of that year.

In March 1806 the earlier partnership of Welbank, Brown and Petyt was dissolved, to be carried on by Welbank and petyt.

DIED
On the 9th Instant, George Welbank,Esq., late of St James’s-place.

In Feb 1827 there was a creditors meeting for sttlement of the debts of the lat George Walbanke of Red Lion STreet, Clerkenwell, Goldsmith and Jeweller.

I do not think this was for him.

Arms Generally notes for George Welbank
It was only in 2020 that I followed up this attenuated notice in “Grantees of Arms”, vol 2, p. 388:
“WELBANK,   .  .  .  ., of Cowton, co. York, and London (1808) Vol XXIV, fol. 396.”
I put a query in to the College of Arms to see if they could tell me more.

(Thanks to Paul Welbank with his Welbank site at <welbank.net> for pointing this out.)

On 1st November 2020 I got this e-mail from William Hunt, Research Assistant to the John Petrie, Windsor Herald:

The blazon of the grant of arms to George Welbank on 26 April 1808 with the limitation extended to include his siblings and their descendants is as follows (Grants 24.396)

Arms: Erminois on a Chevron Azure between three Bucks trippant Sable in the mouth of each a Sprig of Hazel proper an Anchor erect between two Bees volant Or

Crest: On a Wreath Or and Azure A Buck Erminois attired Or in the mouth a Sprig of Hazel proper the dexter forefoot resting on an Anchor Sable

No motto was exemplified.

A pedigree was recorded in 1827 (12D14.53), beginning with the grantee’s grandfather and including his siblings and children.  His wife is given as Ann (sic) Trotter.

The pedigree has been ordered.

It is incredible that this grant was not mentioned by any of his descendants, let alone in the Royal Licence to grant arms to his daughter and her husband, Mary Elizabeth and William Brown (to allow them to hold the Trotter arms.  To me it was only because George Welbank was armigerous that his daughter could carry both his arms and the Trotter Arms carried by her mother.  I had once asked the then York herald about this, before I knew of any grant to George, and he said that the kings of arms could make any grant they wished, regardless of rights of inheritance.

Notes for George & Ann (Family)
Their marriage licence text is:

From the Morning Post of 28 May 1808, p. 4 of 4:

MARRIED
On Thursday last, at Epsom, by the Rev Thomas Woodman, George Welbank, Wsq. of Winchester-street, to Ann, eldest daughter of James Trotter, Esq. of Horton-place, Surrey.
______________________

Finally, the marriage itself, the image of the register page being found on Ancestry:

[Epsom, St Martin  >  1783-1812

“Page   [The Yearf 1808]
“No 225} George Welbank of the Parish Great Winchester, South London and Ann Trotter of this Parish were Married In This Church By Licence This Twenty Eighth Day Of May In The Year On Thousand Eight Hundred And Eight By Me Thos. B Woodman Minister
This Marriage Was Solemnized Between Us:
[Signed] George Welbank  Ann Tyrotter
In The Presence Of [Signed]
James Trotter  George Brown”

The witness George Brown was probably his senior partner in his business who was from Co Durham (or so) and NOT the George aged 8 who was to marry their daughter nearly thirty years later.
