He descended from, on his mother's side, a Stanbury family.  In the 1930s he obviously made some efforts to trace these ancestors, particularly as there were some Stanburys in the 1620 Visitation of Cornwall, and reproduced in Vivian's Visitation book of 1887.

He made various notes:
1. Stanbury: near Bude. N. Cornwall.  Bude - Stratton - Kilkhampton - Morwenstow. [In fact Stanbury is half a mile south of Morwenstow on the map.]

2. Loveston. near Hatherleigh. Devon. Okehampton - Hatherleigh 5 miles to Lord Clinton's estate - meath - turn R. towards Doulton. [I can't find this on my 1.6 miles to an inch road map.]

Further there is a note dated Aug 30 1935:
Loveston
Taken now by a Mr Bone (?) from Oxfordshire. The farm run by the landlord Lord Clinton thro' his agent a Mr Paps.  Brooks farmed large corn acreage until impoversihed by Corn Laws (date?).  Were they landlords then?
Stanbury
Present tenants - farmers called Colville.  Landlord probably Waddow Martyn family of Donnacombe.  House probably built about 1200 by a de Stanburie and remained in the family until impoversihed by failure to change cotton loom spinning to machinery.  Date?

He also copied out an extract on Stanbury in Morwenstow from "Parochial History of Cornwall" by Gilbert, Vol 3, p. 250.

In 1937 he enquired of Archibald G B Russell, Lancaster Herald at the College of Arms, on the Stanburies and got a reply quoting the original 1620 Visitation.

The problem in all of the above is that I found well over a thousand people with the Stanbury surname in the 1881 census with the vast number of them living in Devon. The sketchy pedigree he had written of his parents and Stanbury grandparents has not enabled me to identify which family was his forbears in the 1881 census.  Possibly the 1901 census (if they ever get it going - I write in March 2002... after the complete failure to release it on Jan 2nd 2002) will provide some useful start information.
