There are at least four Ernest Pethicks born between 1873 and 1883, from the census records.
One of these was ‘Ernest E’ in 1881 and born in 1875 and ‘Ernest Ellacott’ in 1891 and also born in 1875, both birth locations being Devonport Stoke Daverel, Devon. So this was the core data to capturing the rest.
His birth index, but with the surname ‘P
athick’:
First name(s) ERNEST ELLACOTT
Last name PATHICK
Birth year 1874
Birth quarter 4
District STOKE DAMEREL
County Devon
Country England

The new GRO index shows his mother’s maiden name:
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname: PATHICK, ERNEST ELLACOTT ELLACOTT
GRO Reference: 1874 D Quarter in STOKE DAMEREL Volume 05B Page 340
I have not obtained his birth certificate. It might be interesting to see what spelling was to be found on the certificate. In the 1881 census it was clearly written as Pethick for all members of the family. Copies of the original registration can be obtained from <

No baptism record can be found.

There is a story going round that he was Mayor of Plymouth. The only evidence I can find is from the Plymouth City Council web site which has a list of all mayors on it. At <
http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/homepage/councilanddemo...yors1800-1900.htm> it shows that a John Pethick was mayor from 1898 to 1900.
