Notes for Muriel Hallifax
Martin P-L writes:

I am sure we all have our memories of Muriel, Grannie F.  I only wish she had retained her wits into my adult life, so that I could have got to know her properly.  Before Altzeimer's took away her memory and some of her kindness, she glowed as a child-loving, entertaining, gallant, trenchant, able and musical lady, with whom it was always a pleasure to stay.  The single incident that stands out in my memory, though I did not witness it, was of her walking her Pekinese, Vinci, across a field when an Alsatian ran at the dog.  She gathered it protectively to her bosom, was bitten in the leg, and still hung on.  Her maternal grandfather would have approved.  - MPL

Of The Old House Bradfield and an old priory adjoining the church in Ashampstead with some genuine medieval painting found on the walls under loads of paint while she lived there.  Both in Berks.

In later life, AP-L said that he moved from Bradfield to get away from her, but that he should not have needed to have done this but should have been able to sort things out somehow.  At the time of the move, mother said that the move was due to the expense of keeping Mead House with all the higher taxes.

The guide to the date of their separation is from my mother’s oft-repeated remark that she only went to school at the age of 15, almost certainly because her governess and her father had recently run off together.  My mother was 15 in 1927.
