Notes for Rosemary Priscilla Ferrand
Original Birth certificate No 396 of the sub-district of Alton of the Registration district of Alton in the County of Southampton

DOB: 30th August 1912
Place of Birth: Morland Hall, Alton Urban District
Name: Rosemary Priscilla
Father: Guy Ferrand Ferrand of independent means of Morland Hall, Alton
Mother: Muriel Ferrand, formerly Hallifax
Date of Registration: 16th Sept 1912
Registrar: Edward English

Oddly, I cannot find this birth on FreeBMD, not under ‘Ferrand’ on its own, nor under ‘rose’ on its own, nor, even, under ‘fer*’ on its own.  Hugo is there alright in 1909, but not her.  But it is on FindMyPast.  I think FreeBMD have not got to that page of the index yet as there is nothing after surnames beginning with ‘Fen’.

2021, TFPL: They have got there and I can produce this:

Surname  First name(s)  Mother    District  Vol  Page
Births Sep 1912   (>99%)
FERRAND  Rosemary P     Hallifax  Alton     2c   355
____________

From APL’s inscription in a Missal he gave her on the occasion, she became a RC on October 22nd 1937.  Sounds like just over 5 weeks before their marriage.
____________

In the 1939 Register she was on her own, so to speak, with a houseful of evacuees and helpers and ... me, all in Mead House.  Currently, 2019, most of the occupants are redacted because they are still alive and under 100.  The map to illustrate the location puts Mead House half a mile from where it is named on the map.  She appears twice, the first entry apparently totally on her own and the second entry with her name mistranscribed as Powys-Lybee but with some of the occupants visible.  They are, including Henry Harrington the gardener whom I remember well:

The next entry on the records was for Henry Harrington and his family, living at the Lodge, Mead House.  I remember him from perhaps the age of three as during the war, when we left Mead House to join my father in Northern Ireland, he went to my maternal grandmother half a mile away and we joined her there for a year or so until the tenants of Mead House moved out about Easter 1945 and he went back to the lodge.  He had served in WW1 and perhaps then been invalided as while a strong man, he was not fit and got my father to supply him with a motor mower, though in 1945 when we first moved back he got a pony to pull the mower round for lack of petrol.  I do not know what happened to him when we left Mead House near the end of 1946.  He used to talk to me a bit and show me what he was doing.  I only knew him as Hannington, only now have I found that his forename was Henry.  His family was:

First name(s)  Last name(s)  DOB  Sex  Occupation  Marital status  Schedule  Schedule Sub Number

Henry J   Harrington  06 Apr 1900  M  Gardener  M  223  1
Hilda M   Harrington  29 Nov 1904  F  Domestic  M  223  2
