Her death index:

GRO Reference: 1902 M Quarter in HARDINGSTONE Volume 03B Page 17
Her ref: Death, Q1 of 1902, Hardingstone dist, vol 3B, p. 17
Hardingstone was the local registration district to Little Houghton where she had lived. Had she gone back there? Where was she living? Who registered her death? It sounds like only her death certificate would answer these questions. It might be worth doing an address search within the 1901 census.

I have searched for her in all censuses and the only one that looks like it was her, apart from the fact that she was reported to be Single, is in 1891 when she was lodging, possibly accompanied by a lady’s maid AND a footman at a lodging house in St George Hanover Square, London:

For the moment I am not adding this to her source references but will first try to see what I can of her husband.
Her husband was found in 1861, he died in 1872, Lucy Charlotte was found in Devon in 1901 with both Ellen Waghorn, above, and her niece Mabel C Stopford. So this 1891 census entry has to be hers and i have added it as a reference for her life.

This led to finding her in the 1861 census aged 47 and born in 1814, contradicting the above baptism information but explaining why my search based on her baptism year did not find her. This census gave also a bit more information on her husband at Houghton House, Little Houghton, Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, which was where he was living at the time of marriage:
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place

In the 1871 census she was still with her husband in Little Houghton and clearly shown to be 50 years old and thus born in 1821, ten years after her actual baptism.

In 1981 neither she nor her husband were found. But her husband had clearly died in 1872: see his probate information in his Will Note.

In the 1879 edition of Burke’s landed Gentry, p. 1482, she was listed as the holder of the LittleHoughton estate. The article showed that her husband had died and showed no living relatives.
In the 1894 edition of Burke’s Landed gentry, p.1871, She appeared as the widow of her late husband but the occupant of Little Houghton House was her brother-in-law, Christopher Smyth and the latter’s children were Christopher and Emily Harriett, both of whom were married and the latter even had some children.
In the 1914 edition of Burke’s Landed Gentry, p.1740, She appeared only as the wife of the uncle of the present estate holder and she was not given any death date. They reported that the previous holder, Christopher, as in 1894, had died in 1897. The current holder, anoth Christopher had two daughters and heirs presumptive.
My guess is that Lucy had to leave the mansion as she no longer had title to is and drove a bit of bargain that gave her two servants to look after her in London. Or she was on a bit of holiday at the time of the 1891 census. Probably one of the Christopher’s brought her back to Little Houghton and she died pretty close and the current holder in 1914 was the one who registered her death in 1902.

A last ditch attempt to find her in 1901: I searched all censuses for a Lucy C Smyth born in 1811 plus or minus ten years and found this entry which looks very much like hers as (a) her birth was in Northants, (b) she had with her the same lady’s maid as in 1891 in St George Hanover Square, London and (c) she had Mabel C Stopford with her who was indeed her niece, being the daughter of her brother James Sydney Stopford. The only issue was that her birth year was a decade out, possibly an understandable mistake. They were in a lodging house at Braddon Hall, Torquay, Tormoham, Newton Abbot, Devon:
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
Emma Crute Head S F 52 1849 Lodging house keeper Torquay, Devon
