________________

Try the censuses from 1851 to 1861 (In 1871 and 1881 she was with her mother).

But there is only one such, in 1861, a Catharine married to a retired Capt Edward Croker and says she was born in Ireland.  Though this does include a second daughter Amelia born in c. Apr 1860 in Cheltenham, Glos who could be the same as her daughter in 1881 born in 1861 though in Leamington, Warks on the 1881 census.  I begin to wonder why her mother gave her the Harding surname in the 1871 census.

In 1861 she was entered into two censuses, one with her mother-in-law and the other with her husband:  Or they may have been separate entries for two Croker brothers.  But this was solved by finding that there were two *melia Crokers, one being Emelia and then living with her paternal grandmother in 17 Royal Parade and the other Being Amelia and living with her parents at 20 Royal parade.

The one, at 17, Royal Parade, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire which is NOT Catherine Frances:

First name(s)  Last name  Relationship  Marital status  Sex  Age  Birth year  Occupation  Birth place
Emelia    Croker  Head             Widow      Female  61  1800  -             Golcar, Yorkshire
Richard   Croker  Son              Married    Male    37  1824  Army Retired  Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

The other, three doors away at 20, Royal Parade, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, which is Catherine Frances:

_______________

There was an Amelia Croker's birth registered in West London in 1860 and with a mother's maiden name of Long.

Was a Catherine Long married to an Edward Croker?  No, not at all.
_______________

However to stir the pot rigily, here is another 1881 census entry for the above 1861 family and living at 14, Lypiatt Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire:

First name(s)  Last name  Relationship  Marital status  Sex  Age  Birth year  Occupation  Birth place
Edward       Croker  Head      Married  Male    60  1821  Income Dividends & Interest  East Indies
Catherine    Croker  Wife      Married  Female  55  1826  -  Ireland
Catherine E  Croker  Daughter  Single   Female  22  1859  -  Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Emilia       Croker  Daughter  Single   Female  20  1861  -  Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Edward Wm    Croker  Son       Single   Male    18  1863  -  Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Henry L      Croker  Son       Single   Male    16  1865  Scholar  Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Jane I       Croker  Daughter  Single   Female  13  1868  Scholar  Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Amelia       Cox     Servant   Single   Female  30  1851  Dom Servt Cook  Compton Abdale, Gloucestershire
Mary Ann     Harris  Servant   Single   Female  22  1859  Dom Servt Housemaid  East Dean, Gloucestershire
Mary         Lines   Servant   Single   Female  22  1859  Dom Servt Parlourmaid  Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

What can now be thought to be going on?  Almost certainly that Catherine Frances who was not born in Ireland is not the person in either of these census entries, nor did she have any daughters.  The grandaughter in the 1881 census with her and her mother, might have been her neice and Catherine’s mother was confused.  I am lost!
________________

This looks like her death:

First name(s)   CATHERINE F
Last name       CROKER
Gender          Female
Birth year      1829
Age             84
Death quarter   1
Death year      1913
District        Stratford on Avon
County          Warwickshire
Volume          6D
Page            1047
Country         England
Record set      England & Wales Deaths 1837-2007

And her will with her named executors totally confirms that it is her.
_______________

I can find no birth records for her daughter Amelia U Croker born around 1860 in Leamington, Warks.  Perhaps her mother's will says something, ordered, as is her grandmother's.
_______________

Later I decided to go through all wills of any Croker with the hope of finding her as the executor.  I started with 1858 and then got to 1881 and therein found Richard Croker of Brighton who undoubtedly seems to be her husband from the probate index.

In the 1881 census she was with her mother at Elm Hurse lane, Old Stratford, the address she gave for the Administration.  More confirmation that I have her right at last.

Now to see if she and he can be found in 1871 in Brighton.
_______________

However (ggrrrr) this is the probable marriage:

Surname  First name(s)   District   Vol   Page
Marriages Jun 1876   (>99%)
ADAMS    Catherine Frances   Kensington  1a  122
Archer   William             Kensington  1a  122
Croker   Richard             Kensington  1a  122
FARLEY   Eliza               Kensington  1a  122

Had she had a previous marriage?

Yes she had:

Surname   First name(s)       District  Vol  Page
Marriages Sep 1858   (>99%)
Adams     Thomas Burrowes     Atcham    6a   1015
Harding   Catherine Frances   Atcham    6a   1015

This, fortunately is all hanging together.

In 1851 she was with her parents,
In 1861 she was with her husband with the married name of Adams
In 1871 she was with her maother who said she was widowed and gave her her birth surname of Harding.
In 1881 she was with her mother with her new married name of Croker and with her stepdaughter Emelia Harriet.
In 1891 she was not to be found
In 1901 she was in Stratford on Avon with her sister Caroline G de Winton
In 1911 She was with her sister Caroline snd her niece Caroline, both de Winton.  She gave her birth place as Barnack Rectory, Stamford, Northants and her sister as Aldridge rectory, Staffs.  She reported no children and Caroline said she had had 9 of whom 2 had died and 7 were alive.
Will notes for Catherine Frances Harding
Her probate index:

Croker Catherine Frances of Halls Croft Stratford-on-Avon widow died 30 March 1913  Probate London 7 June [1913] to Arthur Harding de Winton bank clerk and Katherine Emily de Winton spinster.  Effects £4153 17s. 4.
Folio No 904

The two de Winters were indubitably her nephew and niece, see the 1881 census.
______________

The will confirms all the above.

Her will was dated 16 December 1911 and proved on 7 Jan 1913.

In it she mentions:

Her nephew Arthur Harding de Wiinter, of Lloyds bank, named and proved as executor,
Her niece and god daughter Katherine Emily de Winter, named and proved as executor and residual beneficiary,
Her sister Miss harding (probably Emily Jane),
Her sister Mrs H de Winton (Caroline),

But this still does not resolve her marriage or her daughter.
