Notes for Thomas Powys
Martin P-L wrote:
His identity as the son of John is known from the law suit in which he sued his uncle Thomas Powys, of Snitton, for the moneys uncle Thomas had received in trust for both of this Thomas’ parents.
However very little more is known of him:
His birth date, wife, marriage date and death date are all unknown.
From (a) his father’s death before 1622, when his mother had a new husband, and (b) the fact that he had three younger sublings, he must have been born in 1615 or earlier, possibly as early as 1603 when his parents might have married.
TFPL, October 2016: At one stage I had omitted his son Thomas and inserted that he had married Margaret Powell. BUT:
1. The will of the Thomas Powys, gentleman of Clun who died around 1680 with two young children and refers to his wife Margaret and sons Thomas and Edward. This does not sound like the man who was born in the early years ot the 17th century and is highly probably the will of his son.
2. Martin definitely inserted the additional generation after the investigations by him and Margaret Creaser into the early generations of the Berwick family.
3. The not wholly reliable compendium, Burke’s landed Gentry, clearly says in the 1847-9 edition that John, the son of William who died in 1577, was the grandfather of the Thomas who married Margaret Powell in 1676, as ever with no evidence to verify this.
My conclusion is that I was wrong and that the Berwick line has three generations of Thomas Powys after John Junior, the son of William who died in 1577. I now need to see if any evidence can be found for his birth and death dates, his wife’s name and their marriage date. So far I have found nothing.
