The only way to resolve this is either:

1. Buy his and Winifred’s marriage cert giving his father’s forename and then work through the censuses.

2. Buy successive birth certs until the right person shines forth!

Alternatively I might ask his gt-grand-daughter to see if she knows his birth place and date.

She thinks that his birth was to a Kershaw mother, So if I order the pDF for that birth (cheap!), I can see if the birth date agrees with that on the 1939 register.
