Notes for James Frederick Hay
TFPL, Apr 2008: This is the only birth between 1880 and 1885 in FreeBMD for a James F Hay:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Sep 1883
Hay James Frederick Lewisham 1d 1077

It looks very plausible; he would have been six years older than his wife.  This birth year agrees with his age at marriage.

A similar entry, presumably giving his parents, appears in the 1901 census entry.  His father was William Hay who had died before Sep 1918, but his death cannot be found on FreeBMD.

The London Gazette has these entries for J F Hay, almost certainly him:

29 May 1917: 2nd Lt J F Hay to be acting Lt. 1st May 1917.
20 June 1917: 2t Lt (acting lt) J F Hay to be Lt. 5th May 1917.
11 Sep 1918: Lt J F Hay to be Capt. 4th July 1918.
13 Dec 1918: Capt J F Hay, 14th Bn, London Regt, relinquishes his commission on account of ill-health contracted on active service, and retains the rank of Capt. 14th Dec 1918.
27 June 1919: Capt J F Hay to be graded for purposes of pay and allowanted of Lt. from (S) 8th Jan 1919. (Substituted for the notification in the Gazette of 25th Feb 1919.)

(How could he be downgraded in 1919 when he had resigned in 1918???)
