Feb 2007, TFPL: For some while I have seen comments by sundry people that this Thomas was _NOT_ of the Apley, Shropshire family.  Now Michael Andrews-Reading has just published the results of his researches, giving an account of a very different Charlton family:

From: mjcar@btinternet.com
Newsgroups: soc.genealogy.medieval
Subject: Early Charltons of Middlesex
Date: 21 Feb 2007 02:28:58 -0800

It would appear that the early pedigree of the Charlton family of
Middlesex runs thus:

1. John Charlton, merchant of London; acquired the manor of Ickenham,
Middx, 1334, the manor of Southall in Norwood, 1336, and the manors of
Cowley Hall and Hillingdon by 1348 (VCH Herts); acquired the manor of
Brocton, Bucks, by 1337 (VCH Bucks sub Grove); living 26-27 Edward III
when as John Charlton the elder he and his wife Olive were parties to
fines concerning the remainders to property at Ickenham, Hillingdon,
Cowley etc (London & Middlesex Feet of Fine); married Olive.  Issue:

2a. Juette Charlton, living 1361; married firstly Nicholas Shorediche,
living 1337 (London & Middlesex Feet of Fine); married secondly Sir
Richard Stanley, living 1361; her issue by the first marriage
inherited the Charlton property at Ickenham (VCH Herts)

2b. John Charlton, acquired Swakeleys manor at Ickenham, 1350;
probably the one of that name who received the property at Hayes and
Harrow, 28 Edward III, as the kinsman and heir of Thomas le Frenssh;
issue:

3. Thomas Charlton, named with his father and cousin John Shorediche
as of Middlesex, 14 March 1377 (Cal PR); inherited the family's
Middlesex properties; identifiable as son of John Charlton because of
the property remainders outlined in VCH Herts, whereby had John
Charlton left no issue, those properties would have passed to the
Shorediches; VCH Herts sub Perivale in Greenford states that in 1386
he was referred to as "Thomas Charlton of Folkingham, Lincs" but
London & Middlesex Feet of Fine shows that this was the residence of
Sir John Beaumont, the other party to the transaction; died 1410 (see
his son's entry in HoP); married after 1385 Alice, daughter and heir
of John de Cornhull and widow of Henry Frowyk (d 1386), who died 1416;
issue:

4. Sir Thomas Charlton, MP - see HoP; died 21 February 1447; buried at
Edmonton with his wife; married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Adam
Francis; their tomb bore the following inscription:

"Here lies the body of Thomas Carleton, sometime Lord of this ville,
who died the 21st of February 1447, and Elizabeth his wife, daughter
of Adam Francis knight..."

[End of MAR’s posting]

I am hoping that he will eventually publish his researches but for the moment I think I must abandon the Apley line and tentatively insert the above account.
