Notes for Archibald Brown
Here’s an ‘I wonder if’:
In the early 19th century a Grace Hamilton of Barns, probably heiress of the Hamiltons of Barns and possibly also to the Hamiltons of Raploch, married an Archibald Brown, merchant in Glasgow. Ref the Hamilton of Barns papers deposited in Strathclyde Regional Archives in April 1979.
_______________
His and Grace’s son, Claud Hamilton, got arms to accept the Hamilton estates when he inherited same at Jedburgh. Claud also changed his name from Brown to Hamilton. This is all described in the grant of arms by Lord Lyon.
George Brown, brother of William Trotter, born Brown, refers in his will to Claud Hamilton Hamilton as his cousin, thereby establishing the relationship of this C.H.H. to the Browns of Glasgow and London.
_______________
In the will of his sister Helen Brown, she includes four children of this Archibale and Grace:
Claud Hamilton Brown,
Jane Helen Brown,
Archibald james Brown,
Elizabeth Ann Brown.
Sounds like I have some homework to do on these…
