Daryl has found a baptism for John on 4 December 1715 which reads as:

Balfour

“James Balfour merchant in Edingh residenter in Leith & Lowisa Hamiltoun his spous had A: S: N: John born ye first & baptized 4 December 1715 Wit: John Carr of Todhall, John Kennedie of Kilrenie Advocats, and John Balfour mert in Edingh”
