I bet there will be far too many Robert Carters to begin to locate him in 1881 census let alone his birth. Possibly the 1901 census with his wife will find him.
In the 1891 census he was head of house at No 2 Park View, Green Street, Sunbury, Mx with his wife and son, with three daus and a further son and one servant on the next page.
Their names and birth quarter now all found and none of them have death records on FreeBMD up to 1910.
For his birth there are the following in Marylebone on FreeBMD between Jan 1854 and Dec 1856:
Births Mar 1855 Carter Robert Marylebone 1a 460
Just one! So this is something to put into the pot if I ever get round to looking up his origin, probably using the 1871 and 1861 censuses to try to find his parents.
