Notes for William Ferrand (born BUSFEILD)
Brought in the 1845 Truck Act. JP & DL for W Riding.
He had a remarkable career as a political agitator, raising several items of public concern.  He was noted for his uncorrupt stance and genuine sympathy for (some) problems of the working man.  Hence the interesting book written about him by John Ward with the title "W B Ferrand 'The working man's friend' ", published 2002 by the Tuckwell Press, ISBN 1 89841 070 4.

He has the rare distinction of having some of his writings quoted by Marx in his Das Capital.

Of Harden Grange & St Ives, Bingley.

Assumed, by Royal Licence ("sign manual" by the sovereign), name & arms of Ferrand in addition to those of Busfeild in 1839; in order to be eligible to inherit the estates of his uncle Edward Ferrand.  He later dropped the "Busfeild".

Spoke in the Commons on 19th February 1844: "I maintain that it is the duty of this House to legislate on the assumption that the Roman Catholic Faith is false and idolatrous.".  For this he was given a testimonial by the Protestant Association of Ireland in a gold box, presented to him on 9th April 1844.

His will, with nothing for his daughter Lilia, gave rise to the "Ferrand Will Case" with some washing of dirty linen in public.  He had disowned his daughter when she left house as a minor, probably because of step-mother problems after his second marriage...  Report in Bradford Observer of 7th and 8th March 1890.
