No birth record on FreeBMD, probably born in Wicklow, Ireland.

In 1939 he was called ‘Herbert’, hence the trouble I had in finding this record, and 3 of his 7 children were at Foxley, Marlpit Lane, Seaton, Devon:

                             Birth                  Marital
First name(s)  Last name(s)  date  Sex  Occupation  status  Schedule  Schedule sub number
Herbert G     Archer  16 Nov 1869  M  Incapacitated          W  26  1
Geoffrey H R  Archer  23 Feb 1910  M  Agricultural Training  S  26  2
John G        Archer  19 Feb 1914  M  Market Gardener        S  26  3
Richard R     Archer  13 Apr 1918  M  Student                S  26  4
Gertrude M    West    05 May 1896  F  Housekeeper            S  26  5
Sidney A      Wood    01 Dec 1886  M  Male Nurse             M  26  6

1939 ref: RG101/6832B/005/20
___________

His birth date is two days earlier than that given at his baptism; I’ll believe the baptism theory as two of the people involved in his birth were at the baptism.

The three other children living in 1939 may have their birth dates given as well in the 1939 register.  The challenge is to find them.

Will notes for Hubert Graves Archer
Probate index found (eventually but still remarkably) on the gov.uk site:

1941
ARCHER Hubert Graves of Foxley Marlpit-lane Seaton Devonshire died 23 September 1940  Probate Llandudno 9 April to Geoffrey Hubert Onslow Archer of no occupation.  Effects £1787 0s. 11d.
Further Grant P.P.R. 30 March 1971

Shift smartly to 1971:
197a
ARCHER Hubert Graves of Foxley Marlpit La Seaton Devon died 23 September 1940  Administration (with Will) London 30 March £1500

Perhaps this needs ordering to find what sort of disaster befell them.
