On FreeBMD her birth name is ‘Louise Christine Powys’ and is it pretty close to that at marriage, though with a Fox tagged on.

They are in the 1921 census but I’m not squandering money on that until I am sure there is no other way.

From the 1911 census, their children were:

First name(s)  Last name  Role  Marital status  Sex  Age  Birth year  Occupation  Birth place
Anthony Fox Skeffington Smyth  Archer    Son   -  M   4  1907  -              London Paddington
Leopold Patrick                Archer    Son   -  F   2  1909  -              London Paddington
Geoffrey Hubert Onslow         Archer    Son   -  M   1  1910  -              London Paddington

On the census form they had declared that Louise had had three children, all of whom survived.

From FindMypast’s copy of the birth indices, the Archer births with a maiden name of Powys are:

Last name  First name(s)    Year Of Birth  Year Of Death  Location                     Mother
Archer     Anthony Fox S S  1907           —              Paddington, London, England  Fox-Powys
Archer     Patrick Leopold  1909           —              Paddington, London, England
  Fox-Powys
Archer     Noel P           1912           —              Paddington, London, England
  Fox-Powys
Archer     Male             1914           —              Bath, Somerset, England
      Fox-Powys
Archer     Male             1918           —              Blandford, Dorset, England
Fox-Powys
Archer     Richard R        1918           —              Blandford, Dorset, England
Fox-Powys
Archer     Anne L           1922           —              Wareham, Dorset, England
Dox-Powys (!)

I must congratulate FindMyPast on the flexibility for making the above list.  I had only entered ‘Powys’ for the mother’s maiden name but FMP picked up the birth entries even though in every case, see below, the surname in the records was ‘Fox-Powys’.  Ann’e mother’s maiden name seems to have been an obvious typo on the old index form as the new GRO index gets it right, from the information they got from the individual registrars.

A principal discrepancy between the 1911 census and the births found from FindMypast is that Geoffrey Hubert Onslow Archer does not appear in the latter.  The answer is that his mother’s maiden name has not been added to FindMypast’s database.  And the entry is on the GRO online database but with no name for his birth in 1910; though the page number on the old index sheets is 74b, not the 746 that
FindMyPast has transcribed it as.

The transcript in the same format as above for Geoffrey is:

Last name  First name(s)      Year Of Birth  Year Of Death  Location                     Mother
Archer     Geoffrey Hubert O  1910           -              Paddington, London, England  -

On the GRO online index,

Name:                                      Mother's Maiden Surname:
ARCHER, ANTHONY FOX SKEFFINGTON SMITH      FOX-POWYS
GRO Reference: 1907  J Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 61
ARCHER, PATRICK LEOPOLD                    FOX-POWYS
GRO Reference: 1909  M Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 77

ARCHER, -                                  FOX-POWYS
GRO Reference: 1910  M Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 74  Occasional Copy: B
ARCHER, NOEL POWYS                         FOX-POWYS
GRO Reference: 1912  M Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 140
ARCHER, -                                  FOX-POWYS
GRO Reference: 1918  J Quarter in BLANDFORD  Volume 05A  Page 324
ARCHER, ANNE  LUCY                         FOX-POWYS
GRO Reference: 1922  D Quarter in WAREHAM  Volume 05A  Page 412

It is beginning to look like I will need to pay for the 1921 census to sort the above out.
But first a few deaths, which will be difficult to identify with the no-names.

I had to do the searches by registration district as there were far too many young Archer deaths:

Name:                         Age at Death (in years):
ARCHER, WILLIAM FREDERICK     0
GRO Reference: 1910  J Quarter in PADDINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 7
ARCHER, STANLEY ERIC          1
GRO Reference: 1912  M Quarter in BLANDFORD  Volume 05A  Page 289
ARCHER, NOEL POWYS            6
GRO Reference: 1918  S Quarter in BLANDFORD  Volume 05A  Page 237
ARCHER, STANLEY ERIC          0
GRO Reference: 1919  S Quarter in BLANDFORD  Volume 05A  Page 191

I cannot be sure that all these deaths are Louise and Hubert’s children but at least Noel Powys much have been.  There were no deaths in Wareham.

I found that this family had an article on them in Burke’s Landed Gentry of 1937, p. 44.  The children were listed as:

1, Anthony Fox b. 13 March 1907,
2. Leopold Patrick, b. 9 Feb 1909,
3. Geoffrey Hubert Onslow, b. 23 Feb 1910,
4. Noel Powys, b. 21 Dec 1911, d. 21 Sept 1918,
5. John Graves, b. 19 Feb 1914,
6. Richard Raymond, b. 13 Apr 1918,
7. Anne Lucy, b.16 Nov 1922.

The only one of these to have married before 1937 was said to be Leopold who married in 1933.  This should be confirmed, or not, in my later investigations into this family.

My conclusion about their children:

1. The list in Burke’s Landed gents is complete.
2. Some evidence has been found for each child.
3. For John Graves the above 1921 census led me to find this on the GRO online records:
   Name:                Mother's Maiden Surname:
   ARCHER,  -           FOX-BURYS
GRO Reference: 1914  M Quarter in BATH  Volume 05C  Page 844
4. With this entry for John Graves, the number of registered child births on the GRO online index is seven, agreeing with the Burke list.
5. Accordingly these seven children will be added to this database, the only grandchildren of Leopold and
Mary Fox-Powys.
6. Obviously Hubert and Louisa had difficulty agreeing the names of at least three of their children.
