Notes for Helen Tobin Hughes
m. (1) John Powys, (2) in Jun qtr of 1839, at Crickhowell, George Worrall Jones.

On her marriage allegation she was stated to be 21; assumimg this meant ‘over’ 21, she was born in 1808 or before.
_______________

Her second husband is one of:

John Bevan
Arhtur Richard Gabell
George Worrall Jones
Evan Rees

But I can’t find which by looking for her death under one of these four names.

Nor can I find anything in the 1841 or 1851 censuses.  I suspect that as her daus were living with her brother in 1851, she had probably died before that.

In Feb 2012, Catherine Vaughan-Williams wrote on George Worrall Jones:

My search for GWJ has led me to your interesting site. He is a little peripheral to my main lines of research but an interesting character and very hard to trace. You may be interested to know a little about him.

He was born in Llangenny, Breconshire1807: parents David Jones, Carpenter and Ann Davies and still in Llangenny (Llangwyney or Llangenni) in 1835.  Land tax commissioner for county of Brecon with David Davies of Crickhowell (a future father-in-law), Edward Davies of Llangattock a (future brother - in –law) and others.

In 1839 he married Helen Tobin Powys née Hughes, widow of John Powys and daughter of William Hughes, merchant of Crickhowell in Parish of Crickhowell on 20 April. GWJ is described as a widower; previous marriage not yet found.

George Worrall Rathbone Jones was born a year later. “[to]The lady of GW Jones at Glandwr Cottage Crickhowell a son and heir” Cambrian 14 March 1840.  Crickhowell MarQ 184026.268 but Helen died in producing the son and heir - Death announcement in The Cambrian  11 April 1840: “The wife of GW Jones of Crickhowell age 36 in childbirth”.
In 1841 GWJ was in Crickhowell with son  and sister - Census GWJ 40, Banker, Ann Jones 60  GWJ Jr
2 + 2 servants.
He re-married in 1842 to another widow Jane Smith, daughter of David Davies of Llangattock. From various family wills it is apparent that GWJ had been close to this family for many years. There were two further children- one died at the age of seven and the other aged 23.
In 1851 GWJ 50 was at Glandwr House, Crickhowell with Jane 42 and son Thomas J. 5  and  GWJ Jr, 11, was a boarder at Priory House, Monk St Abergavenny - a Benedictine Monastery and school.

GWJ was involved in many business ventures but ran into difficulties and on 3 January 1857 the Bristol Mercury reported that bankruptcy proceedings had started in  the Bristol court. In 1859 he was declared bankrupt. The London Gazette of 18 Jan 1859, 28 Feb 1860 and 3 July 1861 reported on the dividends to be paid to debtors.

I was unable to find GWJ Sr or Jr in 1861 and in 1864 GWJ  died  - SepQ Abergavenny 11a. 41. Jane died in 1868 6 months before the death of her youngest son Thomas.

GWJ junior 30 was a boarder at the Greyhound Inn, High St, Abergavenny in 1871 and he received a commission in the army at some stage – a snippet of which I have as yet to find the full version – but I can find no further trace of him. There is a birth index for a George Sydney Worrall Jones in 1889 followed by a death index for the same a few months later but I have not followed this up – possibly son of George Worrall Rathbone Jones?

I was unaware of Helen Tobin Hughes’s children in her first marriage. Interesting.

I hope this is of interest – I shall continue my search for the elusive GWJ when I feel the need of the challenge.”

She added in 2015:

“GWJ became bankrupt in 1858 as did his son from this marriage, George Worrall Rathbone Jones in Liverpool (wine merchants Henry and Jones) in 1869.”
