Notes for William Elliot
m. (1) Helen Elliot, (2) (1727) Margaret Scott (dsp 1730), (3) Margaret Ogilvie.

However Geo Tancred, in his book p. 101, gives William a probable birth in 1688 and, p. 87, his death in 1768.  This makes him 80 at death, much more believable.  Tancred reports, p. 107, a deed William signed with Cornelius his (then) eldest son in 1757, when William would have been c. 69.

June 2012, TFPL: Found his burial record, confirming he died in 1768, on Scotland’s people, titled “29/01/1768 Elliot, William [OPR Deaths 665/01 0960 0009 Edinburgh”.  I transcribed the entry as:

Person’s Name  Designation  Burial date  Location

Mr William Elliot  Writer [to the Signet i.e. lawyer]  January 29  L3, D ye E T nollesses tomb old age

Tancred is fairly sure that William was born in Oakwood-miln, served a legal apprenticeship with Andrew Haliburton in Edinburgh and became a successful lawyer (’writer to the signet’).  William then bought many properties over his long life, including Woollee in 1730 but did not take sasine of that until 1742; quite when he started to occupy it is unclear.

By his first marriage William clearly, from various deeds, had only two children, Thomas, a doctor who dsp in 1751, and Elizabeth who is reported to have m. Wm Ogilvie of Hartwoodmyres, brother to William’s third wife.

Geo Tancred says Wm married:
(1) Helen Elliott, date unknown,
(2) Margaret Scott on 9th Oct 1727,
(3) Margaret Ogilvie on 24 Mar 1732,

The only record on the Scotlands People web site is that of ELLIOT, WILLIAM (O.P.R. Marriages 789/ 0030 0035 Hawick) giving:

Jul 24th of 1726: William Elliot and Margaret Scot [sic] both in this parish having been three several Lords days ... (illegible but almost certainly: ‘lawfully proclaimed were marryed.’)

I am not certain that Hawick parish, in the county of Roxburgh, and Stonedge, where Margaret is said to have come from, were the same place though they are definitely in the same county.

Further a John Elliot was born to William Elliot and Margaret Scot and baptised on 4th July 1727 at Hawick Roxburgh.

Arms Generally notes for William Elliot
Balfour Paul’s ordinary of Scottish Arms gives these arms for Cornelius of Wolflee in 1780, Cornelius being the eldest surviving son of William (alsmost certainly by his third marriage):

Gules on a bend invected or a flute azure, in chief a lion passant guardant argent, imperially crowned proper.  ELLIOT OF WOOLLIE (WOLFLEE).

Sounds like the details need ordering from Lyon Office.
