Notes for Christine Cecilia Haywood
Note in RCLP-L's hand:
"1st wife:
"Christine Cecilia dau of James Heywood of Dost Hill House, co. Staffs married 21 July 1875 at the Register Office, Hanover Sq. Died 29 Dec 1879 at Boulogne-sur-Mer. S.P."
In the 1881 census, I could find a mining village called Dost Hill but no mention of Dost Hill House. It seems her father died before 1881 so an earlier census needs studying to find any clues. My current suspicion is that she was a family servant; Wm Reg was only 19 when he married her...
On their 1875 marriage certificate both put their fathers down as deceased. In her case this was probably true, in his case this was false but a convenient dodge to avoid having to get his father's approval as he was then under age.

May 2005, TFPL: Obtained both her Admon for intestacy and found her in the 1861 census, and she was indeed the daughter of James Haywood, solicitor, and indeed of Dosthill House, now known to be in Wilnecote, Tamworth (Staffs). She was aged 6, thus born in 1854-5, born in Edgbaston, Warks. Her parents were James aged 55 born in Sheffield, Yorks and Juliamy (?) aged 40 and born in Chelsea, Middx. (It looks like Juliamy was a second wife and not in fact her mother.)
The weird thing in all this is that I can find nothing more about her or any other member of her family in the 1871 census. Nor could I find her father's will, though I searched for 15 years after this in Holburn.
Interestingly GENUKI has this on the village: "Wilnecote, a large village, two miles SSE of Tamworth, has a small railway station, and its township comprises about 1000 acres, and 824 souls, including Dosthill House, now unoccupied, and many scattered dwellings. Wilnecote Hall is the pleasant seat of Major Bamford. Sir Robert Peel, Bart, is lord of the manor, and owner of a great part of the soil. "

June 2007, TFPL: I have found her birth on FreeBMD which clearly gives her name as Christine so I have changed it from Christina. I have also ordered a birth cert, to give her mother’s name.
May 2016, TFPL: Just noticed that her death announcement in The Standard gives her hame as “Christine Cecilia, wife of W. Reginald Lybbe Powys”. So the name change to Christine is doubly kosher.
June 12th of ditto: the birth cert has arrived. The first fact is that her mother is shown as deceased so must have died in or soon after childbirth. Secondly this gives her mother’s maiden name, Cecilia Lord. Thirdly her birth was not registered until 19 Oct 1854, resulting in the misleading birth date presumed from FreeBMD; this late registration must have been caused by her mother’s obviously tragic early death.

On the 23rd July 1875, this notice was placed in The Standard:
“LYBBE-HAYWOOD 21st, Wm. Reginald Lybbe Powys, only son of P. L. P. Lybbe Esq., of Hardwick House, Oxon, &c., to Christine Cecilia, youngest daughter of the late Jas Haywood, Esq., of Dosthill House, Staffordshire”
I wonder who inserted this notice? Philip Lybbe himself, or his lawyer? I don’t think it was done by Wm Reg.
