Notes for Ann Phillis Greenwood
St Mary's Wallingford Baptism Register:
"1826 Jan 3   GREENWOOD   Ann Phillis d. Thomas, gent & Ann. Market Place JB"

According to Alexander Greenwood in his book, Ann Phillis (as she was baptised) was adopted by her childless aunt and uncle, Phyllis Greenwood and William Stephens, when she was seven.  (Did this presage the fostering of RCLP-L by her daughter Julia Elinor in c.1889?)  This explains why she was married at Tilehurst, Reading, from her adopted parents' home.  (And does it have anything to do with the payment for the English Martyrs in Tilehurst by her grandson?  Doubt it, as this was a RC Church.)

In RCLP-L's testament he says she was left £70,000 in consols by her adopted father, William Stephens.  In WS’s will it was £20,000...

In the subscriber list for E J Climenson’s edition of Caroline Powys’ diaries there was this entry: “2 [copies for] Powys, Mrs, 3 Fourth Avenue, Hove”.  This was around 1899 as the publication date was 1899.

In 1901 she was living with her grandchild Edith M Hill at 3 Fourth Avenue, Hove, East Sussex, aged 75 and born in Walkingford (sic), Berks and living on own means.
Her household was the two of them plus a visitor and three servants.Prior to the census she had ordered a copy of Mrs Climenson’s “Mrs Philip Lybbe Powys” from the same address and is on the list of subscribers to that book.

But what was she doing in Hove in 1901, so close to her late husband's second family, even though the latter (Fanny, Amy and Helen) had moved to St James, London in 1901???

In 1911 she had moved to Barrington House, Lingfield, Sussex (where she died) still with her grand-daughter but with five servants, two of whom were nurses, so she was obviously not well by then.

TFPL, May 2004: In the Times of 21st April 1857, there is this law report:

COUURT OF CHANCERY, LINCOLN'S INN, APRIL 20
[Before the LORD CHANCELLOR]
STEPHENS v. POWYS
This was an appeal from a decree of the Master of the Rolls relating to the construction of the will of Phillis Stephens, late of Prospect-Hill, in the county of Berks.  The testratrix by her will, dated the 22d of April, 1856, two days after the death of her husband, William Stephens, and without seeing his will, stated, "Whereas I have reason to

Her death certificate shows that she died on the 21st February 1912; this is in contrast to other PL records that say she died on the 27th; however the death was registered on the 24th, so the 27th is impossible.  Her name was given as Annie Phyllis Powys and her occupation was: widow of Philip Lybbe Powys Lybbe a Barrister-at-law.  The cause of death was: Cerebral Haemorrhage 28 days and Coma 7 days, certified by E Allan MD.  The informant on the 24th Feb was her son-in-law Philip S. Darnell of The Manor, Nether Wallop, Stockbridge.

In the margin there is this note:
“Husband took name of Lybbe after marriage Wife living separate not been known by that name.”

Mon Inscripts notes for Ann Phillis Greenwood
On a memorial stone somewhere (dunno where! - TFP-L  Probably Haywards Heath?  Though her 1904 will, at the age of 79, has her living at No 3 Fourth Avenue, Hove with a companion, Clara M Snell, and a servant, Annie Goodwin):

"To the memory of Anne Phyllis widow of Philip Lybbe Powys-Lybbe of Hardwick House Oxon, eldest daughter of Thomas Greenwood (2nd son of Charles Greenwood of Rush Court, Wallingford by his wife Mary Ann Jacques) and Anne Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Richard Sheen of Wittenham, Berks.
"Born 19 April 1825.  Died 27 Feb 1912."
Notes for Philip Lybbe & Ann Phillis (Family)
I believe the separation to have been in 1863 or before.  The reasons are (a) that his first child Amy to Fanny Worth was born in around 1865 and (b) he got the Royal Licence to change his name in 1863, and he used the name of Lybbe for himself, Fanny and their three daughters.
However RCLP-L writes in his testament that the separation of his grandparents did not occur until 1869.  I just don't think he, RCL P-L, got it right.

On their marriage certificate, he said he was of full age (correct, at 25 and 364 days) and she was 19.  They were both unmarried, he was a Barrister at law of Whitchurch, Oxon and she was of Tilehurst (where her adopted parents lived).  They both said their fathers were Esquire.

The witnesses to the marriage included Willm Stephens (adoptive father of Anne), Charles Greenwood (possibly Anne’s uncle) and three unknowns: W G Romaine, Wm Roges and Innes Pocock.  Note that none of the witnesses were Powyses.

The marriage was by licence so there is presumably a document at some faculty office that will reflect this.

The FreeBMD marriage record only enables her record to be found; his is, curiously, not there.

The Marriage Locator site <http://www.marriage-locator.co.uk/>; calculates that the church was Tilehurst St Michael.

The Hereford Journal states explicitly that she was Wm Stephens’ adopted daughter.
