Notes for Philip Barrington Lybbe Powys
Martin P-L writes:
1865 matriculated at St John's Coll.
Died at St Thomas, East Cowes, buried in family vault in Whitchurch churchyard.
A memorial window at Whitchurch, opposite the entrance, commemorates him, his sister Edith and his brother Wm. Reginald.

TFPL, April 2002: Note that on his matriculation to St John's in 1865 he was still using the name POWYS.
I found him in a book of Eton pupils for 1862 but the £60 price of the book seems a tad heavy for a short two-line entry.

TFPL, May 2002: I obtained his death certificate (as part of the process of trying to unravel Fanny Worth) and thereon it states:
Registration District: Isle of Wight.
1868. Death in the Sub-district of Cowes in the County of Southampton.
No: 24
Where and when: Fifth October 1868, St Thomas' East Cowes
Name and Surname: Philip Barrington Lybbe POWYS
Sex: Male
Age: 20 years.
Occupation: Son of Philip Lybbe POWYS Landed Proprietor.
Cause of death: Acute Rheumatism, Disease of the Heart, Certified
Surname, description and residence of informant: Henriett [sic] Parsons present at the Death, St Thomas's East Cowes
When registered: Seventh October 1868
Signature of registrar: G.K. Whitmarsh
The first point to note is that not only is his surname given as POWYS but so is that of his father, in spite of the Royal Licence of 1863.
Secondly the informant, Henrietta Parsons, is down as a Lady's maid in the 1861 census at Cowes. Was she the only person present at the death? Or was Philip's mother also there but declined to visit the registrar herself? In view of her actions around the time of her youngest son's William's death 20 years later in 1888, where she appeared before he died but did not attend the funeral, I suspect that she was there but did not wish to show herself in public.
