Notes for William Whitehouse
William and Susannah were first found in the censuses as parents of John Whitehouse.

From the appearance of the first child around 1922, William and Susannah got married in 1841 or so.  One of the four females married inthe Penkridge district on the same day in 1941 was Susan Hodgkiss and this was the only such marriage in Staffs.  Extending the range of years from 1842±2 to 1840±5 did not reveal any more such marriages anywhere in Staffs.  So I’m going with Susan Hodgkiss.

There were at last3 a hundred Whitehouses in Cheslyn Hay in the 19th century so it is going to be difficult to identify their deaths.  A closer approximation is to find when they vanish from the censuses.  The 1861 census is in their son John’s Notes. So we want the 1871 census onwards.

In 1871 they were at The Green, Cheslyn Hay, Penkridge, Staffordshire with their son John and his wife Emma and their family next door:

First name(s)  Last name  Relationship  Marital status  Sex  Age  Birth year  Occupation  Birth place
William Bate  Whitehouse  Head  M  M  50  1821  Miner  Staffordshire, Great Wyrley
Susan         Whitehouse  Wife  M  F  50  1821  -      Staffordshire, Great Wyrley
Josiah        Whitehouse  Son   U  M  23  1848  Miner  Staffordshire, Great Wyrley
Mary Ann      Whitehouse  Daur  U  F  16  1855  -      Staffordshire, Great Wyrley
William       Whitehouse  Son   U  M  15  1856  Miner  Staffordshire, Great Wyrley

In 1861 the whole family apart from William was said to have been born in Cheslyn Hay which is were they were living both in 1861 and for this census in 1871.  So I don’t trust the enumerator’s info in this census; the handwriting and crossings out and calling 5-year-olds ‘Miner’ all looks a bit slapdash.

In 1881 they were at 3, Green, Cheslyn Hay, Cannock, Staffordshire:

Stephen     Whitehouse  Son   S  M  18  1863  Coal miner  Cheslyn Hay, Staffordshire

The birth places in this census correspond with 1861 and are much more believable, unlike 1871’s.  The birth plave for Susan is different though and may account for the odd names on their marriage certificate.

In 1891 he may have been a general labourer aged 67 but married to a Sarah aged 75, not Susan.  I need to see if Susan had died.

There was a mmariage in the Stafford district in 1882 between William Whitehouse and one of Sarah Jane Wilks and Martha Simmonds.
