Notes for Sarah Jones
Her birth date is on record from the 1939 Register: let’s hope it is right.

There are 256 Sarah Jones birth records from 1859 to 1863.

There are 250 births in 1861 alone (odd, I would expect a fifth of the previous figure).

In the 1901 and 1911 censuses she was reported to have been born in Shrewsbury and St Mary Shrewsbury.
Restrict the registration search to Shrewsbury and we get three results only:

Name:                  Mother's Maiden Surname:
1. JONES, SARAH        STEVENSON
GRO Reference: 1861  M Quarter in SHREWSBURY  Volume 06A  Page 641
2. JONES, SARAH        PREECE
GRO Reference: 1861  D Quarter in SHREWSBURY  Volume 06A  Page 617
3. JONES, SARAH ANN    BLOWER
GRO Reference: 1861  J Quarter in SHREWSBURY  Volume 06A  Page 668

her birth was in the middle of Q1, the M quarter; might she have been registered before the end of March?
Or might she have been registered in Q2?

That reduces the candidates to 2.

Let’s see what appears in the 1861 census in Shrewsbury for babies aged 0 in Shrewabury?

Two Jones families are to be found with a Sarah who is of zero years:

Family:  Address                          Father       Mother        Daughter
1.       Hills lane, St Chad, Shrewsbury  John         Ann           Sarah Ann
2.       Holy Cross, Shrewsbury           Edward       Ann           Sarah A

The next step is to list the parents full names of the two marriages assuming each was in Shropshire:

        Surnames                           Full names
   Groom        Bride            Father                    Mother
1. Jones        Stevenson        Charles Jones             Rebecca Stevenson
2. Jones        Stevenson        William Jones             Sarah Stevenson
3. Jones        Blower           John Jones                Anne Blower
4. Jones        Blower           Richard Blower            Charlotte Jones    (!)

I’m not sure this is getting very far.  The only solid information for Sarah might be her marriage certificate which would give her father’s name.  Or I could buy the above two Birth certificates, that would give the full names of the two pairs of parents for further exploration.  Think about it and see if anything cheaper can be found.

An Ancestry family tree gives her parents as Samuel Jones and Elizabeth Stevenson.  Something to follow up?

Notes for Edward Lewis & Sarah (Family)
Originally I had mistakenly given the mother of Nellie Keight to be Sarah Probin as there was indeed a birth of a Sarah Keight with a mother’s maiden name of Probin in 1896, not a million miles away from 1898 birth date given in the 1939 census.

This error was given credence because at all censuses for the family and in her death certificate Nelly Keight (and with a married name of Eccleston) always had her named spelled as Nellie.

I could not make sense of the family as I could not find the marriage of Sarah Probin and Edward Keight.  No such marriage existed.  So I made a list of the maiden names of the mother given inf the birth index entries for all the children in the 1901 and 1911 censues for Edward and Sarah Keight of Cannock:

First name(s)  Last name   Rel  Marital status  Sex  Age  Birth year  Occ  Birth place          Mother
William G  Keight  Son       S  M  17  1884  Hairdresser                Shrewsbury, Shropshire  Jones
Martha E   Keight  Daughter  S  F  15  1886  Dressmaker                 Derby, Derbyshire       Jones
Samuel E   Keight  Son       S  M  13  1888  -                          Cannock, Staffordshire  Jones
Rose       Keight  Daughter  -  F   7  1894  -                          Cannock, Staffordshire  Jones
Fred       Keight  Son       -  M   5  1896  -                          Cannock, Staffordshire  Jones
Nellie     Keight  Daughter  -  F   2  1899  -                          Cannock, Staffordshire  Probin
Emily K    Keight  Daughter  -  F   0  1901  -                          Cannock, Staffordshire  Jones
John Kenn  Keight  Son       -  M   9  1902  School                     Staffs Cannock          Jones

So this was really very odd indeed, and I was inventing social situations to account for this.

Then I got back to the birth year of Nellie Keight which is clearly 1898, or 1899 with a  rounding error, in the censuses  No census gave a birth date of 1886 which was the birth to Sarah née Probin Keight.

I found there had been a marriage between Edward Keight and Sarah Jones in Atcham, Shropshire in 1883.

I then tried a search for a daughter born in 1897 to 1899 to a couple of Knight and Jones.  This produced a registered birth of a Nelly Keight in Cannock where they had been living and not in Birmingham where Nellie Keight was born in 1896.  The 1898 birth is on both the old printed indices and the new GRO indices as ’Nelly’; I wonder if that confusion was called by the registrar mishearing the name the mother had told her, for is was Sarah the mother who registered this birth?

Anyhow this resolved the problem: the birth in 1898 was registered as Nelly Keight for the person who in all subsequent docuemnts had her name written as Nellie.  And Nellie’s mother was, indiputably, Sarh Jones.  And the marriage index record is:

First name(s)     Edward Lewis
Last name         Keight
Marriage quarter  1
Marriage year     1883
MarriageFinder    Edward Lewis Keight married one of these people
                  Sarah Jones
District          Atcham
County            Shropshire
Country           England
Volume            6A
Page number       915
Record set        England & Wales Marriages 1837-2005

Eagle-eyed observers will have noticed that Edward used the second name of Lewis also in the 1911 census.
