The Tewkesbury Register of Saturday February 17 1940

                             DEATH OF MR ATHERTON BERENS

                              Prominent Agriculturalist

The very many friends in the district of Mr Atherton (Ben) Berens, formerly of Paynes Place, Bushley, will receive with much regret the news of his death at his residence at Sutton Parva, Haytesbury, Wiltshire, after a short illness.
Mr Berens, who was 62 years of age was a brother of the Rev. George Berens-Dowdeswell, squire of Bushley, who took the name of Gerens-Dowdeswell upon his succeeding to the Dowdeswell Bushley Estate.  Soon after this succession, Mr Berens came to live at Paynes Place, the famous house in which Queen Margaret took refuge after the Battle of Tewkesbury.
He was very well-known as a popular figure in agricultural circles and in many years of valuable service in the interests of the farmer deservedly secured a place of high honour in agricultural annals.
A prominent figure in the Farmers’ Union, he was in 1932 and 1933 chairman of the Tewkesbury branch, and also for some years played an imporetant part in the affairs of the County Executive, of which he was chairman in 1930.  Throughout the whole of his residence in this neighbourhood he gave unstintingly of his time and energy to promote the welfare of the Union and his fellow agriculturists.  Upon the dispersal of the Dowderswell Estate he, to the regret of all his friends, left the district for Sutton Parva.  He presided as chairman of the Tewkesbury branch of the Farmers’ Union for the last time at the annual meeting in November, 1934, when in the course of a short speech at the close of the meeting he bade farewell in affecting terms and was obviously much moved in parting from so many friends.
Mr Berens was a well-known sportsman, and to him badger digging especially appealed.  In this pursuit he was very active and skilled, and in a period of five years he and his friend Mr J Goodson, accounted for not less that 300 badgers.
He is survived by a widow and three daughters.
The funeral took place at Sutton Vesey Church on Wednesday, and amongst the many present were the following representatives of the Tewkesbury branch of the Farmers’ Union:- Mr F D Perry (chairman), Mr W R Fowler and Mr D Davies (past chairmen), and Mr J Goodson (secretary),
