His parents were Thomas Fitzgerald and Sarah Anne Elizabeth Purefoy née Jervoise, the heiress of Shalstone.

From Burke’s Landed gentry of 1914, he was of a long recorded Purefoy family, since 1350 roughly and 1500 more definitely, whose male line had died out once or twice and latterly had the surnames of Jervoise and FitxGerald.  His son Richard reverted to the name of Purefoy by RL on inheriting the estates of Shalstone, Bucks in 1899.  The entry for this Richard in the LG of 1914 is:

R.N., b. 7 J a n . 1837; m. 16 April, 1861, Henrietta Mary, only child of Rev. Anthony Chester, of Chicheley, ;o. Bucks (see BURKE'S Peerage, BAGOT, B.), and d. 28 Feb. 1895, having by her (who d. 15 May, 1895) had issue,
1. RICHARD PUREFOY, now of Shalstone.
2. Henry Purefoy FITZGERALD (Rev.), (Lidwells, Goudhurst, Canon of Worcester (b. I Sept. 1824), who d. 29 Dec. Kent), M.A. Oxon, F.L.S., b. 27 May , 1867; m. 16 April, 1891.  Lilian Mary, eldest dau. of Walter Langton, of Gatcombe Park, Isle of Wight, and has issue,
  (1) Knightley Purefoy, b. 12 July, 1899.
  (1) Cicely Purefoy, b. 4 Jan. 1897.
  (2) Marjorie Purefoy, b. 11 April, 1898.
  (3) Geraldine, b. 14 July, 1901.

At the 1861 census, on 7th April, he was staying with a retired barrister at 64 Brook Street, St Geo Han Sq, London.  Obviously he was there in preparation for marriage and at marriage he said his abode was Brook Street.
