In 1891 he was boarding on a farm in Sussex with Elizabeth N Hogarth, probably his sister.  He was aged 17, given a birth year of 1874 and born in Scotland.  Elizabeth was 18 and also born in Scotland.

In 1881 he was with his widowed mother, 3 siblings, a governess and 4 servants, still down as born in 1874 but with the extra informaion that this was in Aberdeen.

IOn 16 Oct 1939 he and Louise (Presumably Sophy?) departed Southampton for New York, the last voyage of their to be recorded.  They both gave their ages as 65 and their address as 62 Cornhill St, London EC3. He was a merchant.  Their boat was “Rotterdam” of the Holland America Line.

I wonder if they stayed in USA for the duration of the war and then both died there?

One or two internet records say that he died on 19 Jun 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland.

I have got to the online index for Baltimore city but all it has is a Joseph Hogarth who died on 17th Jun 1944.  I would have to pay $25 odd to get any more information.
