Notes for Samuel Lock
This person is a placeholder to relate the two brothers, John and James Lock.

June 2020, TFPL: Mike Haddock presented me with an excellent account of this Lock family of Bristol which both gave three generations prior to this unknown father, who is now revealed to be Samuel and a reference the the Lock entry in the 1687 Visitatioin of London which I had completely missed. He included explicit references to old documents which he quoted verbatim and thus provided me with excellent cast-iron genealogy.
One interesting suggestion is that John Locke the philosopher is related to this family.
MKike Haddocks account of Samuel is:
“Samuel Lock of London merchant” bap 30 Jun 1644, Bristol, and recorded in his grandfather’s 1666 Will. Married Christian d/o Joshua Warren merchant of Colchester. (Joshua Warren, 1623-??, probable son of Joshua (1594-1640) & Sarah (Morris, 1599-1630) Warren of Colchester, appears to have moved to London. The Warren family appear to have been early Dissenters/ Independants/Separatists, & Christian’s aunts Hester married Quaker Samuel Strangman, Mary married Quaker Abraham Fuller, and Elizabeth married Quaker Robert Cuppage). Around 1674/6 the family moved from the Broad Street area of London to the Billingsgate area. “Samuel Lock of Rood Precinct, Turners Hall, Philipot Lane, Billingsgate Ward” submitted his genealogy to Heralds 25 Jun 1687, see Visitations of London 1687 ‘Samuel Lock’. The 1695 Record of London Inhabitants Within the Walls includes: “St Margaret Pattens: Samuel Lock £600, wife Christian, daughter Barshaby, daughter Christian, daughter Catherine, son John, son Samuel, son Charles, daughter Jeane, son James”. “Samuel Lock of London merchant” wrote his Will 10 Dec 1713, cod 22 Jan 1713/4, pvd 20 Jul 1715 (PROB:11/547) recording, inter alia: “my daughter Mariabella Albertson & her husband John Albertson; my grandson James Albertson; my granddaughter Christian Albertson (drawn to the Roman Catholic Faith); my four sons John, Samuel, Charles & James; my daughters Bathsua, Christian, Catherine & Jane; to my son John the Ostrig Egg shell sett in silver gilt given me by my Grandmother Lock; my uncle William Avery; my sister Ledgwick, Mr Stephen Ledgwick deceased; my properties in Bedminster, Somerset, Lawrence Weston in Henberry, Gloucestershire”. He was buried at Bunhill Fields 15 Jan 1714/5.
