Notes for Lewis Vinall
The only birth for a Lewis Vinall in England and Wales is:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1878 (>99%)
Vinall Lewis Glazebrook Lewes 2b 183
The year of birth does not agree with with the 1911 census which gave a birth year of 1866/7 or his death registration which gave a birth in 1869. So it might just not be him. Or he might have been faking old to be nearer the age of his wife.
In the 1911 census there was a Lewis Glazebrook Vinall, solicitor who had also been in the 1901 census and thus could not be this Lewis Vinall.
If he was born in 1866 in Peckham, London, then like Mabel, it looks as if his birth was never registered.
There is no Lewis Vinall birth registered in Scotland from 1855 to 1880.

In the 1939 register he was an inmate at the mental home where he died and stated to be a retired army officer. The London Gazette offers that:
1. On 27 Jan 1917 he was a temp 2/Lt in Glos Volunteer regt.
2. On 14 Aug 1917 he was promoted within the Glos Regt from tempt 2/Lt to Lt.
3. On 11 March 1918, also within Glos Regt, he was promoted from temp Lt to temp Capt.

His will added nothing: he merely left everything to Mabel, no mention of any blood relatives.
There is one detail to note, that Upper Dicker, their village, was reported to have been in Hellingly which is where his mental home was where he died; the phrasing in the probate was “Be it known that Lewis Vinall of Osbornes Upper Dicker near hailsham (in the will called Osbornes, Upper Dicker Hellingly) in the county of Sussex...” Dis Lewis or his solicitor cause this confusion? The will was dated 5 June 1923.
Hellingly and Upper Dicker are about two miles apart.
(But his solicitor is to be congratulated for such a short and simple will.)

Notes for Lewis & Mabel (Family)
By 1904 Mabel was known as Mabel Vinall as her mother Fanny Worth gave her this name in writing her will of 1904.
In the 1911 census they said they had been married for 14 years, making the start of their partnership to be around 1897.
Their marriage registration date:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Vinall Lewis Pancras 1b 200
The certificate needs to be ordered...
