Notes for Capt Walter Wightwick Haywood
His birth:

HAYWOOD Walter Wightwick Kings Norton 18  397
_______________

On 25 Jan 1845, this report appeared in the Sheffield Independent:

"By the will of the late Samuel Hall Lord, Esq , of Lorng Bay Castle, Barbadoes, his extensive estates and property, subject to certain family provisions, are entailed on his grandson, Walter Wigbtwick Haywood, (son of our townsman, James Haywood, Esq.,) who, in accordance with the will, is to assume the name and rank of the testator, and to take as heir-looms the magnificent furniture, plate, and paintings, with the mansion-house of Long Bay--Birmingham Herald."

He was aged 1 at the time of his grandfather’s death so may not have, as a minor, been able to actually change his name then.  The 1911 census shows that if he did ever change his name, he then changed it back again.
_______________

On 25 Apr 1876, The Morning Post had a notice of the birth of a son in Bradford, Yorks.
_______________

On 20 Sep 1862, the Hampshire Advertiser copied from the London Gazette that he was to be a Lt from 16 Apr 1862.

On 25 Sep 1863 he was appointed a Lt in the Bengal Army.
_______________

In 1911 this is indubitably him and the original sheet shows that they had had five children, all of whom were still living.  Their house had 14 rooms so he was not short of a bob or two.  His occupation is unclear, though indicates he was retired and may have worked for a railway company.  I think he got each member of the household to write their own names on the form as the handwritings are different:

Address: 57 Holland Road, Kensington W

From his daughter’s and granddaughter’s birth places, he must have worked abroad much of his life.

He was not to be found in the 1861 census, though a couple of other Walter Haywoods born in 1843 were.
