Notes for Jonathan Bartholomew
The problem with this Jonathan is that there were two Jonathan Bartholomews born in the 1850s.  They were first cousins and their births were no more than 10 miles and three years apart .  This led to my getting the two thoroughly confused.

This one was a stable lad rising to the dizzy height of head lad.  His cousin died at the age of thirty and was omitted from all the censuses save his first in 1861, dying in 1886.  This Jonathan appears in most censuses, married and had a family and died in 1924.  Both their deaths were registered in the Newmarket district.

He was first found in his father’s census of 1861 but in 1871 he was a stable boy living with a Race horse farrier (blacksmith and running a rather superior lodgings for 19 stable boys at The Cottage, High Street, Newmarket; his birth was reported as at ‘kennet, Suffolk and he was 19.

He married in 1877 whereas his cousin did not marry and his family of two children appears clearly in the 1881 census:

And the three of them were together still in 1911, though Jonathan was out of work - or retired, or ill.  Percy was a shopkeeper in a Bootshop.  They recorded they had had four children, all of whom were still alive.  Their house was a substantial seven rooms (excluding scullary, landing and bathrooms).  Percy signed the form - but someone else had filled in the main form, I wonder whom?  Though it looks like the original entry was in pencil and then written over in bold, clear ink - by an enumerator?
