A birth certificate (wanton extravagance but invaluable!) was in fact bought by her gt-grand-daughter and showed that Anna Maria’s parents were William Daniel and Mary, née Turner, Payne; they had married in Q3 of 1838. William Daniel then died in Q3 of 1857, a year after Anna maria’s birth.
I owe it to this gt-granddaughter and her brother that I now have what looks like the True Story. Thanks, guys.

Anna’s mother then married George Wake, a widower with 2 sons, in Q2 of 1860 and the 1861 census has this family:
