He appears in the 1841 census aged 7, born in London and the son of Compton Reade, a solicitor born in 1811 plus or minus 5 and his wife Jane also born in 1811 plus or minus 5. They were living in Tavistock Square, Marylebone, London with two other children and four live-in servants.

The above 1841 census entry places him as of the family of Reade of Ipsden, Oxon which is listed in Burke’s landed gentry for 1845. As such it would seem that this Compton was a cousin or second-cousin to his wife, both being descended from Major John Scott-Waring MP who was a great friend of Warren Hastings and gave that name to one of his sons, Emma’s paternal grandfather.
Unfortunately the various versions of Burke’s LG do not extend to Compton’s family, so we don’t know quite what happened to Compton and Emma’s two children, who appeared only in the 1871 census.
