In 1881 she and Compton were lodging in Marylebone, London.  He was a ‘Clerk in Holy Orders and Journalist’, she was and Authoress.  Where were their children?  Neither child could be found separately on the 1881 census, nor did either have a death on record.

In 1891, they were living, with no children, at Burghill Rectory, Kenchester, Herefords; he was a clergyman.

In 1901 they were still there, with no live-in servants.

In 1911 she was a widow, lodging at 25 Castle Street, Hereford and an authoress of private means.  Interestingly it gave her full name of Emma Gertrude Mary Reade.
