Notes for Emma Butt
Prob: m. (1) (Q4 of 1861) Clement Augustus Scott (d.1866), (2) Alfred Powys
Peter Hodge reports that at marriage to Norman she was a widow. In the 1871 census there were two Emma Scotts in Lambeth, one of whom was a widow aged 31 with a daughter Marian who was 7 and born in St Clements Dane, Middx; this Emma was born in St Giles, Middlesex and was a ‘crape finisher’.
In 1881 an Emma Powys was married to either Richard Eggett or Charles Langham, the marriage occurring in the registration district of St George Hanover Sq. But I can’t find this marriage in the 1891 census.
The only Marian born in central London is:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1864 (>99%)
SCOTT Marian Strand 1b 522
which looks rather likely to be the daughter.

This looks very much like Emma in the 1861 census, particularly the residence in St Clement Dane, where her daughter was born four years later:

SCOTT, Emma Wife Married F 25 1836 Southgate, Middlesex

Having established her first husband, their marriage looks like:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1861 (>99%)
Carter Emma Bethnal Gn 1c 502
Dabbs Matilda Bethnal Gn 1c 502
SCOTT William Bethnal Gn 1c 502
Tame James Joseph Bethnal Gn 1c 502
This makes it likely that her maiden name was Carter. (Phew)
BUT:
THE FAMILYSEARCH TRANSCRIPT OF HER MARRIAGE TO GEO POWYS SAYS HER FATHER WAS JAMES BUTT.
_______________
But there are rather too many Emma Carters born around central London to be sure which is her record of birth (if any).
I cannot find a death of any Emma Powys up to 1930 in Middlesex. Perhaps she married again, though I’ve been unable to identify that with any certainty.
________________
TFPL, Aug 2012: Her first marriage now becomes:
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Dec 1861 (>99%)
Butt Emma Lambeth 1d 607
Scott Clement Augustus Lambeth 1d 607
and Clement’s death is:
Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Deaths Mar 1866 (>99%)
Scott Clement A 37 Chelsea 1a 159
So the birth of a daughter Marian Scott in 1864 is possible, but the registration in the Strand is not completely local.
