Notes for Amfelisa
H B McCall in his “Richmondshire Churches”, p. 130, reckoned she was a daughter of Alan, Constable of Richmond Castle, referring to some Charter Rolls in Gale’s “Richmondshire”.
This is squarely confirmed by C T Clay in his “Early Yorkshire Charters”, Vol V, Richmond Fee Part II, pp. 153-7. The gift of land in Pickhill was in 1175 give or take a year.
Page 91 of the same volume shows that Alan was the son of Roald, the son of Harscod.
In some histories she is said to be “Amphelisa de Rolleston” but EYC does not confirm this, even indicating that Rolleston was a Neville property not from Alan the Constable. Though Amfelisa may have had Rolleston as dower in her widowhood.
