Notes for Jollan de Neville
Clay in his “Early Yorkshire Charters”, vol V, pp. 154-7 clearly identifies him as the son-in-law of Alan the Constable and then goes to some length to establish his own parentage.
Clay’s first point is that Jollan was another name for Joscelin. Then he fairly clearly establishes that Losward, the Domesday tenant, was the father of Richard who was the father of Rocelin who was the father of Joslen. Clay further suggests that Jocelin’s use of the Neville surname comes from his mother who was probably a Neville, supported by several Neville witnesses of this charter on pp. 153-4.
