I had assumed from the above that their childrens’ parents were abroad. But no, there they are too in the same census, happily living in Ealing. It is possible that the children were on holiday with their governess, though.
On the other hand, the same split can be found in the 1901 census. I wonder if there a series of domestics? is this something to do with the fact that Major McCrae, the author of the Wetherall book, did not include his daughter-in-law’s name in his pedigree for his son? I even wonder if the Major was so horrified at some goings on around his eldest son that it caused him to write this book about ‘Family Tree and Services’, in the interests of proper behaviour for King and Country?
