Notes for John Arthur Holmes Jephson
His father was major John Noble Jephson of The Lawn, Paignton, Devon.  A John Noble is on record on the War Graves Photographic project as having died of wounds 29 Aug 1915 in Greece, confirmed by CWGC site, and is said to have been the second son of Dep Insp Gen William Holmes Jephson MD.

Matthew Broadbridge has kindly e-mailed me this generaous amount of information from his researches:

“John Arthur Holmes Jephson was born 13th March 1902 in India where his father was a serving Indian Army officer.

“Educated at Wellington between August 1914 and August 1919 and Royal Military College, Sandhurst December 1919 to December 1921.

“Appointed Second Lieutenant  in the 16th Lancers (a British Army cavalry regiment) 23/12/21.

“He served with the 16th Lancers, soon after renamed the 16th/5th Lancers until he transferred to the Indian Army in January 1927, joining the 4thBattalion, 1st Punjab Regiment.

“He served with them until December 1931 when the battalion was disbanded.

“Meanwhile he married on 24/9/27 Patrica, da. of late Gawayne Baldwin Hamilton QC (died 1924) at Bombay Cathedral. She died on the 29/12/1968 as the result of a road accident.

“With the disbandment of his battalion he transferred to the 18th King Edward’s Own Cavalry later (in 1936) called 18th King Edward VII’s Own Cavalry.

“Promoted Major 23/12/1938

“He applied to retire in August 1939 but the outbreak of WW2 prevented this.

“He served as Company commander (Instructor class B) at the New Officer Training School, Bangalore from 15 July 1940 to 12 May 1945.

Released from the Indian Army 13th November 1946, he formally retired 19th November 1947.

After the war he lived at 159 Cromwell Road, London, S. W. 5. He died in hospital 18th May 1967 and is buried in Surrey.

His only son, Richard Jeremy Jephson, was born in 23/2/29. Later killed crash of Aquila Airways Short Solent flying boat G-AKNU 'Sydney' at Shalcombe near Brook, IoW on 15th November 1957 with his wife.”
